I don't agree on that one, but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by his voice when I saw him live.

I'm not saying that his voice was bad during that period. Sorry, I should be more specific. He sounded really good on the albums released then. However, from the live vids I've seen from that time (late 80s/early 90s), his voice sounded strained and hoarse at some points, like he had some trouble hitting certain notes and his voice would crack very noticeably. He hasn't had that same degree of trouble again in his recent concerts. It's made me wonder if he had some issues with his vocal folds (nodules, etc.?) way back then and if he entered voice therapy for a bit.

Paul McCartney - Live In Japan 1990 2/13

Here's an example. Listen to his rendition of "Got to Get You Into My Life" here. We may be hearing things differently, but I feel as though he is really straining when he tries to sing the "Got to get you into my life" parts. I know Paul likes to sing roughly sometimes for a rock effect, but in this video, I don't think his vocal roughness during the chorus is intentional. IMO, there is something really wrong with his voice there and it's painful to listen to.

An Apple Beatle

I'll hazard a guess that he may have had a night on the sauce the night before. ;)
