I'd like to know what people here think about this song?
I think it's incredible, musically and lyrically. Musically it's a great showcase for Beatles' and George Martin's work in the studio. While it doesn't have a very memorable melody, I can get easily lost in its, well, landscape. Lyrically, on the first sight, is another of Lennon's vague psychedelic pieces. But soon as you discover that lyrics were inspired by an old poster, everything becomes very clear. To be able to conjure up an image of a hundred years old show in music and words is an amazing feat, I think.
Also, in the years of listening to Sgt. Pepper, this song has become a sort of centerpiece of the album for me, coming straight from the last 'bye, bye' off previous song and before going into the George's soft singing on Within You Without You. I don't have the LP, but the placement of a song at the end of side one is very fitting - I sometimes listen to the cd that way!
