I just finished listening to AT 40-The '70's with Casey Kasem. The rebroadcast was from the week ending 12-26-1970. The #1 song was actually 2 songs! ''My Sweet Lord'' and ''Isn't It A Pity''. Before the songs were played, Casey told the story about George Harrison being the only Beatle who grew up with both parents. (He mentioned John's father leaving, Paul's mother dying, and Ringo's parents divorce.). After "My Sweet Lord", Casey mentioned that this was the first time in 12 years (1958) that a male solo artist had a double sided # 1 record. Elvis was the last one to do it. (I'm guessing it was ''Don't Be Cruel'' and ''Hound Dog''). Then they played ''Isn't It A Pity''. George was the first of The Beatles to have a #1 single (My Sweet Lord/ Isn't It A Pity),and the last to have a #1 single (Got My Mind Set On You).

Yes indeed. Very interesting.
We tend to forget that for a while it became fashionable to put out double A sides.
I think the record companies weren't too sure which song was going to take off so they were hedging their bets.
I've always wondered whether The Long And Winding Road wasn't a double A with For You Blue.
Do any Americans reading this remember it being so?
If it was the case, For You Blue should have been on ONE !
