Beatles Videos
« on: February 27, 2011, 09:51:29 PM »

Can't this be classed as a video ?
(even though it was in the days before video players ! )

go here
The Beatles - Penny Lane Promo Video

A great song and a great video... in living colour
( though Im thinking most of the nation saw it in black and white back then ! )

It was probably termed a promo film for the  single  Penny Lane
( what a "B"  side too ! )  .. they were at the top of the tree back then.

Talking about trees,  wonder where the Strawberry Fields video was filmed ?
looks like  parkland somewhere .. a private estate maybe ?
go here
The Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever [HQ] LONG VERSION

(Yet another classic video  from the pre video days ! )

starofwonder, the music video (or "promotional film" as they were called back then) for Strawberry Fields Forever was filmed in Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent on 30 and 31 January 1967.

Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields are great songs -
and I love them. As for videos...  I'm not thrilled or overjoyed every time I
see my favourite band on screen. I like to see them
performing live and not singing on play-back
(Hello, Goodbye, for instance - although costumes are
great!) But - I like that play back a lot more than Penny Lane
/ SFF videos. Simply put - videos are way behind the songs...

But, I admit, video for Walrus is crazy
(and interesting), almost great as the song itself!
And I like Something because they dedicated
it to their girlfriends / wives. Also, I adore Hey Jude
(live on TV).

But - video for Your Mother Should Know is interesting
for first 50 seconds, when they walk down the stairs... The
rest of it is boring - just girls swinging left-right with their dresses!
I mean, first you are focused on Beatles when they synchronously
come down (which is great), and when they "vanish" at 0:48 - you
expect something would happen - synchronous dance, exciting
choreography... but nothing happens - just girls doing left-right and
some walking...

Wasn't there some fabulous  video done in the 60s   by BBC2
for the release of one of the albums....   the one with "Because" on it .

Wonder if that  art work / video  is  available anywhere ?

Any  visuals  put out  to a Beatles song was controlled back then by the Beatles and
probably still is in some way even today !

Dare say there are a lot of songs without  any film or vid performance by the Beatles.
... they just put the song on an LP   then forgot about it and got on with another song

I like the videos for Paperback Writer and Rain.
I was in a band myself years ago and we filmed our one and only video in Chiswick Park in London. It was only later that I discovered that it was the same park used for those two Beatles videos!

Can't Buy Me Love is also a great music video - full of fun and energy. It's not really a part of the AHDN movie because it can be removed from the movie completely and still stand up in its own right.

I also love some of the earlier Beatles ones such as We Can Work It Out and Day Tripper, where it is obvious that they aren't taking it too seriously!
I think they started making those videos in 64/65 because it was easier than trying to get the band into the BBC studios in London to play live on TV shows such as Top of the Pops.

I think they were years ahead of their time when it came to using the power of TV to market themselves, even without playing lots of personal appearances all the time.

The Beatles kept a steady stream of videos coming to The Ed Sullivan Show after they stopped appearing live on his show.  We all eagerly awaited each new video.  It was The Beatles' way of thanking him.

The Paperback Writer and Rain videos are among my favorites also...

Could nt they have done  little low budget vids  for all of the
Sgt Pepper  songs  ?

Lovely Rita  for  eg... they could have hired  actress Madeline Smith,  dressed her up
as a Meter Maid....
Some  footage of  Paul walking back to his car,  sees Madeline writing out a ticket....
in her little white book ...... (in a cap of course )
The filming could have  all been wrapped up in a  day    !

Next  day.......She's Leaving Home...... why not the actress Carol Hawkins ?
there were so many babes around in the  60s  !!!!

Half the fun would have been casting these little cameos .... Judy Geeson comes to mind !
( not to mention Susan George ! )

Things were different back then. It was in the days before MTV even appeared, so music videos weren't the standard.

That being said, I'm sure there is enough footage around that we've never even seen!

Paul or John only had to pick up the phone back then in the 60s
and all these babes would have come  running  !

(Jane and Cyn might have got a touch jealous though ! )
