Richardovellee:
Does anyone have any ideas or plans for a Florida music history unit? It is a standard in Florida, but hard to locate any info.

Thanks

Hi Richard! What grade level would this be for?

I have some ideas but no formal lesson plans...

Just off the top of my head I can think of several bands /genres represented by Florida musicians:

Lynyrd Skynyrd (Jacksonville) - Southern Rock
.38 Special (Jacksonville) - Southern Rock
Molly Hatchet (Jacksonville) - Southern Rock
Allman Brothers Band (Jacksonville) - Southern Blues/Southern Rock (they started in Florida but didn't really hit it big until they moved to Macon, GA)
KC and the Sunshine Band (Hialeah) - Disco, Funk, Pop
Tavares (Tavares) - R&B, Funk, Soul, Pop
Jim Stafford (Winter Haven) - Folk, Pop, Novelty/Humor, Country
Miami Sound Machine (Miami) - Latin, Funk
Gloria Estefan (from Miami Sound Machine) - Latin flavored Pop, straight Pop, R&B
Jim Morrison (was born in Melbourne and attended FSU) - Member/lead singer of The Doors
Tom Petty (Gainesville) - Rock, Pop
Gram Parsons (born in Winter Haven although Waycross, GA is considered his hometown) - "Cosmic American Music", Country-Rock, Rock, Pop, Blues
Slim Whitman (Tampa) - Country & Western
The Bellamy Brothers (Darby) - Country, Country Rock, Pop
Mel Tillis (Darby) - Country, Country Pop
Pam Tillis (Mel's daughter) - Country

I know there's more but that's all I can come up with right now...
