Gilbert and Sullivan

(1/4) > >>

Dmitry:
Have you heard operas of librettist W.S. Gilbert and the composer Arthur Sullivan?

I wasn't familiar with any English opera before, but yesterday I've heard H.M.S. Pinafore which is quite interesting and funny. It is a comic opera!

You can listen to the whole thing:

Or just listen to one track: http://www.deezer.com/music/track/11975195

What do you think?

Klang:

They're great. In many ways their work can be thought of as the precursor to the modern musical comedy.

Check out 'The Mikado' - my fave.

 :)

Dmitry:
Thanks! I'll check it out!

Klang:

Also, if you can get the movie 'Topsy Turvy' - came out in the late nineties - it tells their story in part, especially dealing with the time during the creation and production of 'The Mikado.' Very insightful and amusing.

 :)

It's about class struggle...and the boundaries of love.  It's a magnificent light opera!  How did you come across it, Dmitry?

You'd like The Pirates of Penzance too.
