Song Of The Week - Ive Got A Feeling
« on: July 10, 2014, 12:48:18 PM »

I've got a feeling, a feeling deep inside
Oh yeah, oh yeah, that's right
I've got a feeling, a feeling I can't hide
No no no, oh no, oh no
Yeah yeah I've got a feeling yeah

Oh please believe me, I'd hate to miss the train
Oh yeah, yeah, oh yeah
And if you leave me I won't be late again
Oh no, oh no, oh no
Yeah yeah I've got a feeling yeah
I've got a feeling

All these years I've been wandering around
Wondering how come nobody told me
All that I was looking for was somebody
Who looked like you

I've got a feeling, that keeps me on my toes
Oh yeah, oh yeah

I've got a feeling, I think that everybody knows
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yeah yeah I've got a feeling yeah
Yeah

Everybody had a hard year
Everybody had a good time
Everybody had a wet dream
Everybody saw the sunshine
Oh yeah, (oh yeah) oh yeah, oh yeah
Everybody had a good year
Everybody let their hair down
Everybody pulled their socks up
Everybody put their foot down
Oh yeah
Yeah I've got a feeling
A feeling deep inside
Oh yeah

Oh yeah

I've got a feeling
A feeling I can't hide
Oh no

Oh no no no

Yeah yeah yeah yeah
I've got a feeling

I've got a feeling

Everybody had a good year
Everybody had a hard time

Everybody had a wet dream

Everybody saw the sunshine

Everybody had a good year
Everybody let their hair down

Everybody pulled their socks up

Everybody put the foot down
Oh yeah

Oh yeah

I've got a feeling
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

(Oh my soul, so hard.)

"I've Got a Feeling" is a song by the Beatles, from the 1970 album Let It Be. It is one of the songs on the album from the rooftop concert. It is a combination of three unfinished songs: Paul McCartney's "I've Got a Feeling", John Lennon's "Everybody Had a Hard Year" from the White Album sessions (where it was demoed as "Everyone Had a Hard Year") and "Watching Rainbows."

McCartney's song was written for his girlfriend Linda Eastman, whom he soon married, telling her that she was the girl he had always been looking for. Lennon's song was a litany where every line started with the word "everybody".

While McCartney's song was very optimistic, Lennon had actually had a hard year—he divorced his wife, Cynthia Lennon, his girlfriend Yoko Ono had a miscarriage, he was arrested for drug possession, and he had grown deeply unhappy in the Beatles.

In the film Let It Be, Lennon jokingly claimed he had written "Everybody Had a Hard Year" the night before.

Personnel

Paul McCartney – lead vocal, bass
John Lennon – lead vocal, rhythm guitar
George Harrison – lead guitar
Ringo Starr – drums
Billy Preston – electric piano

Always liked it. A standout on the album for me. Clever how the various bits were interwoven. A nice listen.

One of the better songs on Let it Be I think. It's welding together of separate Lennon and McCartney songs works really well.

Not a huge favourite of mine in the overall Beatle repertoire. It's largely appealing because of the rocky feel and sense of the Beatles having fun playing it rather than any great melody or lyrics.

I have a version I got off a bootleg long before Anthology came out (might be on there, don't remember).  Anyway, the version I like and have on my ipod has Paul laughing at the end of the first line and they re-start on the fly without pause.  Changes the mood of the song for me.  Like the song, like the riff, not the best, not the worst.

Theres a sort of middle 8

All these years I've been wandering around
Wondering how come nobody told me
All that I was looking for was somebody
Who looked like you

after the last word 'you' there is a solo guitar part where the note is bent back to the original key, I really hate that guitar figure, it sounds sort of crappy to me, wouldve preferred nothing (silence)

Overall I think its a poor song with little or no meaning to the listener, a kind of throwaway and in some part it gives ammunition to the Let It Be detractors, the song is saved quite a bit for me by Pauls excellent singing.

I think so too, Moog.  For the reasons you stated.

Love it.

One of those 2nd Division Beatles songs that always comes up fresh because it is rarely played and, for me, has overtaken many of the 1st Division songs ('Lucy', 'Walrus', 'In My Life', ''Get Back') that are now over familiar.

Never had a problem with the 'Let It Be' LP actually, I've got far more of an issue with 'Let It Be......Naked', my copy of which made it to Oxfam not too long after its release.

Fair go's mate, I like it too but I dont think it has much of a melody, its two half arsed songs (jams) cobbled together, its one of those fillers to me that the Beatles could get away with because they were the Beatles

I think there are much better songs on LIB that have good strong melodies

Let It Be
L & W Road
Two Of Us
Across The Universe
I Me Mine
Get Back
Dig A Pony

I'd probably rate it above L&W road and across the universe in that list. It's probably not a better "song " than those two. As you say it's basically a jam. But it's a fun one I think. Of the rockier songs on the album I'd rate it below I me mine and Dig a Pony though.

Strange animal the 'Let It Be' album.

'Let It Be', 'Get Back' and 'Across The Universe' had come out before in other, arguably better, versions; 'Dig It' and 'Maggae Mae' are linking songs rather then actual songs; 'One After 909' had been tried years before; and, out of 10 proper songs, George gets two (way above the George average!).

And yet, check out that track-listing, it's stunning!
I'd put it above pretty much any other LP released in the 1970s, and definitely above every LP released after that.

From the time it came out and through the few years following, 'LIB' was my favorite of theirs. Don't ask why, couldn't say. Maybe it was mostly that they were going for simpler production techniques and a purer sound. 'Getting back' as it were. Anyway, that album was always with me in my 'on the road' days. That one and a worn-thin copy of Melanie's 'Candles In The Rain.' My entire record collection for a year or so. Strange days.

I've always liked it. Pretty good song on a pretty poor album in my opinion. You have Paul and John singing together. Whats not to like?

Clever how the various bits were interwoven.

There's a sixteen measure quodlibet there!  That superimposed verse was brilliant.  Very Leonard Bernstein...

I really like this song.  When we first heard it, we knew The Beatles had broken up (news travelled slowly in the pre-internet era).  But watching the movie in the theater and seeing them singing I've Got A Feeling on the rooftop, we saw this band as tight as ever.  And they were having fun!

Another well-known quodlibet...

Scarborough Fair/Canticle

Simon & Garfunkel - Scarborough Fair (Full Version) Lyrics

But, unlike The Beatles, they didn't sing the quodlibet when they performed the song live...
