Fascinating thread and I'm a bit late to the game here, but I've always found Norman Chapman to be one of the more interesting people in the entire Beatles saga. Afterall, without the draft notice to go into the army, he would have likely been Ringo. I'm surprised he's not a bigger story.

i beg to differ...the most irreplacable beatle was ringo...the non ego was an essential piece of the puzzle...

I think you missed the point, PC...
Had Chapman not been called for duty, there might have been no need for Ringo.
Besides, Ringo could have been as cool and as fun as anyone, but the Beatles never would have made it without the brilliant songwriting of Lennon and McCartney.
