It's actually a reconstructed head of a neandertal, without the hollywood hairstyle. Current thought is that give one a bath and some decent clothes and they could sit next to you on the subway and not look too odd. I have a thing about them. For years I hoped they would find that europeans had some link with them, but DNA seems to have shot that little daydream down (bloody scientists, taking all the magic out of the world.) But their story still fascinates me - our poor "idiot" cousins who didn't quite make it. I have a neandertal (fake) head on my bookcase. Girlfriend hates it.
The only dodgy thing about this image is that the chap has a very modern countenance. He looks like he thinks, worries and laughs. We don't know if they did and it's a dangerous assumption to make. Images of neandertals more often reflect the biases of the artist rather than fact itself.
