It may not have been as good as the 60's but it wasn't all hurl-worthy.

I can't argue with Exhibit One being hard to take but what about Joni Mitchell, Carole King, The Carpenters, Chicago, John Denver, right off the top of my head? The early part of the decade still was pretty good, I'd say.

I see what you did there! But I still contend that 70's music wasn't all bad and I further contend that it didn't all make you hurl. I know for a fact that you are seriously in love with Linda Ronstadt. I know that she had a hit with the Stone Ponies in 1967 but she was a major 1970's star. True, she did it with a lot of 50's and 60's covers but it was still in the 70's. Perhaps that's not compelling enough evidence but this has to be.....

Interesting discussion. I think the 70's brought a whole lot of creativity and originality out in the music, and not just the early portion. Depending on how one feels about these genres, it was also the decade of the beginnings of punk, new wave, and techno. Accordingly, I consider groups like Ramones, DEVO, and Kraftwerk to have been tremendously influential, right up to this day. As much so, maybe, as The Fabs.

From my point of view, pop culture peaked at its best in the 70's, sort of fulfilling and completing what was begun in the 60's.

Of course, there has always been and always will be good music to be found at any time. We may have to dig a little deeper these days to find it, though.

they were influencial klang but nowhere near the Beatles imo

yesterday (Sunday) I went into JB HIFI in Brisbane, a big music store, I saw box sets of Beatles vinyl, box sets of Beatles CD's all over the place, and selling for top dollar (not in the bargain bin), I didnt notice any Devo or Ramones, Sgt Pepper on vinyl was $38

being as its its 43 years since they split up, thats truly amazing

I watched a Rock quiz thats on tv every week here, there were several questions about Beatle music, everyone seems influenced by them.

Yep, good points.

I guess my primary thought was that the 70's had a lot of diversity and good stuff throughout. I kind of look at it as 60's v.2

That's right. All great stuff. If the 60's cracked some doors then the 70's kicked them wide open.

A lot more to it than disco and sugar-pop.

Agree with the last sentence, and I think this is true for any other decade for that matter. The only secret is to get beyond the mainstream. Then the treasures'll start showing up.

Very true. You can't get much more sugary than this from 1969:
The Archies - Sugar, Sugar (Original 1969 Music Video)

This was Billboard's #1 song of 1969!!

Interesting discussion.

Yes it is and maybe it should be merged with this earlier one:

Perhaps one of our nice mods (or an incorrigible one) will come along and work their mod magic.  :)

That was always one of the biggest outrages of its time. Thinking about all the great music from that year, and this was the big winner.
