Sex
« on: September 03, 2008, 11:04:23 AM »

Great message subject, right?  ;D  Just to attract all of you here, haha!

I read an interview with a blogger/critic that he prefers the Rolling Stones to the Beatles. It's his good right of course, but I found his way of thinking interesting. His motivation: "As I grow older, the music of the Rolling Stones becomes more interesting. I used to listen to the Beatles a lot, but not anymore. I never think of sex when I listen to The Beatles and I do when I listen to The Rolling Stones."

So, what are your experiences on this?  ;D

I'm too young to discuss this stuff .....  ;) But I'd love to hear people's experiences!

My experience has been precisely the opposite: the Stones sound less and less interesting to me every time I hear one of their records (too much cheese and adolescent posturing for my taste: see "Midnight Rambler"), and if anything, lately I've been listening to the Beatles even more (Purple Chick / Lazy Tortoise releases providing the main excuse). The Rolling Stones don't make me think of sex, they make me think of what happens if you don't get out of a teenage mode of thinking.

And as for men thinking about sex every five minutes or so... please: maybe in the dead of winter; in the summer it's about once every seventeen seconds. (smoking1)

I just can't think of wanting to have sex listening to the Stones.  The Beatles, oh yeah.........the "While Album" makes for some great "atmospheric" music.....................

I Want You has got some sleazy sexy guitar licks. The thrust of the hammond, the raunch of the guitar, the pain, longing and wailing in the vocals, the seductive rimshot latin groove, throbbing bass. I'd say they went balls out to get that sounding sexy. lol  ;)

It was also hippie slang for turning someone on to drugs. You know, the whole tune in, turn on, drop out mantra of the lazy and unwashed. Anyway, I think that's more of what they had in mind than the alternate meaning.

Overall, I would agree that the Stone's are way more sexual than the Beatles. Not just their music either. I mean, all you have to do is look at Mick to know he's pretty much got only one thing on his mind. Mick and the boys are very raw and base. The Beatles come off as more intelligent and way less aggressive sexually. Now, in their personal lives I'm sure it was a different story, but they didn't project it like the Stones. Their songs certainly aren't dripping with sexual overtones, grunts, and moans like a lot of Rolling Stones songs. Why Don't We Do It In the Road and Happiness is a Warm Gun are the ones I think of as being very obviously sexual. That and the moaning at the end of Lovely Rita. That was inspired.

It's even represented in their choice of logos! More sexual, let's see, the lips and tongue or the granny smith apple? So yeah, sex and the Beatles don't really go hand in hand. Sex and the Rolling Stones though. Uh huh! So  yeah, it's not too far of a stretch to think of sex when you're listening to the Stones. Weird reason to listen to one more than the other though. Maybe the dudes Viagra doesn't work for him anymore and he's looking for alternative means of stimulation or something.  :X

Here's both bands around 1968. Come on! The image very much matches the music they were putting out. No? Even scruffy, the Beatles give off a wholesome image! Not that they're not sexy though. But in a completely different way. And their music is more positive and uplifting than it is sexual. Which is a good thing cuz really, I think the Stone's became a one trick pony with that stuff. Not much depth overall. Not too many Gimme Shelters in their catalogue.

As Sandra said, sometimes the Beatles were downright blatant when it came to sex, like the moaning at the end of Lovely Rita.....and Ringo's exclamation:  "I'm leaving!"

Right, Sandra.  There's plenty to make you think of sex in Rolling Stones music as well......Miss You, Under My Thumb, Let's Spend The Night Together and Midnight Rambler to name a few.  If you can get your hands on a first vinyl pressing of the US version Out Of Our Heads album, listen to (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.  You'll hear:

When I'm ridin' round the world, and I'm doin' this and I'm signin' that
And I'm tryin' to make some girl pregnant
Baby, better come back maybe next week
'Cause you see I'm on a losing streak

That was soon cleaned up.

I've always liked the Rolling Stones, especially in their counterpoint to the Beatles early on.  They were indeed raw.

Heck!  I even liked them during their drunken sailor phase!
