Just a very small, almost insignificant idea - how about a pop-up window appearing if we get a  new private message whilst browsing the board (and as we sign in - if we've got messages).

Yeah it's very cool to get those PM's as pop ups.  Many forums have that gimmick.  So why not here ? 

I agree.  Good Idea.

But as a second thought, i've realized that this is cool when the sender and recipients are
on line, i've never been on line with anyone here. Even in the old forums. The idea is still
good thou.

That's what I was thinking - a little bit of instant messaging!

PM instant messages... i like that!!!! Hey wait, didn;t i say the word "message" twice !?!?!
