The reason I'm giving Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band such a bad rating is because it's so overrated by some of my fellow Beatles fans & by music critics that it's sickening despite being the Beatles psychedelic masterpiece of epic proportions back in 67 even though it's NOT their greatest classic rock album or the greatest classic rock album of the sixties since Abbey Road is a helluva lot better without all the pomp & circumstance & hype of Sgt. Pepper besides John & Ringo only liked SPLHCB partially looking back on it in interviews if you have seen their quotes.

Sgt Pepper IS a major piece of work, like it or not.  At the time it was incredible, nothing like it.  Loking back with decades of hindsight it may seem less than stellar to some but if you were there in 1967 I guarantee it earned every accolade.

Overrated? Not at all:

And dude...you need a period or two!

i dont think its over rated at all - at the time it was legendary, and i don't think time has done it any harm

Sgt. Pepper is a psychedelic masterpiece which was the soundtrack for the youth of the 60's during the summer of love with great tracks like Fixing A Hole, Getting Better & A Day In The Life but it's looked at like a classical album by Beethoven by the media & music critics for almost 40 years now instead of a great classic rock album by the Beatles, which is pathetic.

Why do people constantly bash Sgt. Peppers and throw the overrated tag on it? It was the first album by a rock band that broke all the rules. The comparison of music and art was defined by this record. I dont think that its the greatest album or even the best Beatles record, but I feel that it truly is a legendary effort that demands respect. I hardly feel that its overrated. I accept Sgt. Peppers for what it was in its time,,,,,,a true first in musical experimentation.

You're welcome to your own opinion, Wayne, but I can't see what's 'sickening' about Pepper's supremacy.
Sgt.Pepper didn't have any particular hype. There was no movie linked to it, there was no single lifted from it (a la Something) and there was no bragging (like the silly self promotion for the White Album put on the Yellow Sub sleeve).
And yet it stayed 148 weeks on the British chart.Nearest rival was Abbey Road which managed 81 weeks.
Given this domination, some fans try to say that the really best album is Revolver or whatever. They're just trying to be clever because it sounds dumb to just agree with everybody else.
Anyway, in my opinion their best album is A Hard Day's Night.

That shows that you weren't there. The hype in the months leading up to Pepper was enormous. And when it finally came out ... hype? They redefined it!

Hm.  I was there but I don't recall any hype, beyond the fevered expectations of whatever they were going to follow up Revolver with.  It was a LONG period between those two albums (damn near a year) so the only 'hype' if any was the anticipation.

What hype were you talking about?

Not at the time.  Only later, in retrospect (maybe by the 70's at the earliest).

These things go in cycles - at one point Rubber Soul was the masterpiece! I think Q magazine have changed their minds 4 times over the years!

True, true.  Each Beatle release overshadowed the prior one in real-time pretty much in the 60's.  Only after they broke up did all the looking back and critiquing occur.

It may not be their best album but it's still great. I mean come on it's #1 album on the England charts.

You gotta understand, there was no album like Sgt Pepper at the time, it was a first.  Sure now there are some better, but it was the first.  And some of this uniqueness is lost on the CD version.

Ok...to recapitulate....Sgt. Pepper is the most overrated album of all time(any artist)....and MMT is the most underrated album of all time(any artist) Pepper was #1 on Rolling Stones All Time Greatest Albums.  While MMT didn't even make the list of 500.

And jus to spoon feed your opinions to you...The White Album is without doubt the most influential and greatest achievement in the history of Pop Music.

Sorry JWL, I have to agree with Mr Charlie - you can't look back now and try to undermine the importance of Sgt Pepper - this was truly ground-breaking material in its day. It really did point Pop music in a totally new direction - it was starting to be taken seriously.

Sgt Pepper is probably the most important LP ever recorder. Yes there have been better records since, both by the Beatles and others, but that doesn't take away from how innovative Sgt Pepper was. If you only allowed yourself to listen to pre 1967 music and then put it on you should see the difference.

And anyways A Day in the Life is the best song ever by anyone!

Sgt Pepper is just absolutely perfect.
Perfection can't be overrated!
My favorite songs on it are:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, With A Little Help From My Friends, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Getting Better, Fixing A Hole, When I'm Sixty-Four, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heats Club Band (Reprise), A Day In The Life

=DDDDDDD Ahh, how I love to ressurect an old topic.

I just got Sargeant Pepper's last week -- love it. It's crazy. At the time -- I couldn't really say, not being there...;ASFSKLGJKGSAKJLGS. How much I wish I had been...-- it was completely new, different, thinking outside the box. Actually, take a look at some of the stuff we had now -- or better, don't, a lot of it's pure crap -- and you just can't get the fantabulous unusual wackiness that was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band anymore, really. I don't care if people say it's overrated -- I gotta agree with the mainstream media's opinion on it; it's REALLY great. <3

AND I WANT ONE OF THOSE OUTFITS. XDDD They ROCK!

Except for my stupid CD got scratched somehow; there's a bunch of clicks during the four thousand hole in Blackburn, Lancashire part... But it passes through. *le sigh*
