I usually latch on to people too late. The Beatles in '76, Neil Young in '79 (when his best work was already done.) While it is enjoyable exploring a past catalogue, nothing matches awaiting a new release, then dashing down to the record store on day of release, home on the bus with your treasure tucked under your arm. Mind, the last time I did that was Double Fantasy, and oh what a dissapointment (for me). Five bloody years!

That is the big drawback. If it's a back catalogue at least you can find out if it's any good or not. There's nothing worse than anticipation followed by massive disapointment.
I remember when I was working in a record shop in Putney for a few weeks in 1978. This little 16 year old punk had the new Sham 69 single on order. He came in every day for about two weeks to see if it was in. And when it finally came in of course he wanted to hear is straight away. It was Hurry Up Harry, and you could see the poor little thing trying desparately to hide his disapointment.
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.
I was about 9 or 10 years old as i recall and coming home from school one day i noticed my dad had purchased Sgt Pepper on cd. i knew nothing of the fabs and never really took music seriously up to that point. i remember sitting down being brought into this wonderful world of beatles music on a hot summer's day. i discovered sgt pepper (now my fav album of all time) and realised the crap music that was in the charts of the momet which was the early 90's. i was listening to real music & real songs!! From then on i had to have more & more on them. I recived the 'Rock & roll music' compilation that was released in 1976 for christmas & wouldn't stop playing it. I had no complaints from anyone as they claimed i had great taste in music! Ever since i have collected anything on them (records, cd's, books, etc) and i suppose its an obsession. John, Paul, George & Ringo have help through up & down times. i always put on one of there albums and feel so uplifted! there is no other music quite like the fabs! I'm now 24 and still have a long way into collectingand learning about them!
HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY TO THE WHITE ALBUM! you say its your birthday!

You hit the nail squarly on the head there. I think there are very few bands/artists that large numbers of people are obsessed with. The Stones, The Beach Boys, Elvis, and of course The Beatles. It's a way of life!!

What a great memory, Andy! So cool to here from a younger person.

People discovering them now are so lucky. There's a wealth of material out there - official, and bootleg - you're going to have a lot of fun.
I am, I am! I'm collecting, reading articles, watching vids-- they're just so fun to delve into, these guys from Liverpool. It's a rewarding time. Cheers!

My dad bought me the Beatles 1 when I was in 3rd grade. (I'm in 7th grade now) I heard it, but didn't care much for it at the time. Then, when I was in 5th grade, he bought all for of the capital albums and it was $60, so I pretty much HAD to listen to them. I remember calling my friend that same night and saying, "You won't believe what my dad's putting me through... he's making me listen to the Beatles!" Then, a couple weeks later, he bought me the Ed Sullivan Show concert dvd. I knew they were bound to be my favorite band as soon as they started to sing "All my Loving." I liked the Beatles for a various number of reasons: 1. It made the bond between my dad and me become stronger, 2. It influenced me to play the guitar, 3. They LOOKED good 4. they wrote their own songs, 5. their music makes me happy , 6. their songs had lyrics I could relate to, and 7. they all had good voices. Now, they're my favorite band, I'm going through Beatlemania (even though the music artists now have more technology), and I'M THE MOST OBSESSED BEATLE FAN ALIVE!!!!
So cool, Tara. Those are all terrific reasons. I'm only getting into the Beatles now, after many years. It's wonderful, all the things there are to discover. Cheers, and welcome!

Oh..... that stinks. Well, at least you got to feel the anticipation before a cd came out and had chances to go to their concerts. Anyway, did you ever go to any of their concerts? If you did, what were they like? Oh gosh I'm asking too many questions again! So.... bye!
The first thing about the Beatles I can remember is my father telling my five elder sisters (yes I know, I'm spoiled) The Beatles split up. I was almost five years old then. Sad thing that my first memory is the split up. I've been digging deep, but I can't remember ever hearing Help! when I was born. I returned to the Beatles after hearing Paul McCartney and the Wings. Around '77 I think, I think I heard Band On The Run and Jet and thought (still do) it was great! But who was this Paul McCartney anyway? Member of the Beatles? Well, let's listen to some of that. .. One of my sisters bought a Beatles record (didn't have much to spend), think it was Beatles 1962-1966, the red album. I learned how to play the guitar, got a book full of Beatles songs and then I wanted to know them all.
It's funny hearing different peoples stories depending on how old they are. I'm coming from a perspective of having grown up with them. It's a whole different thing for me, personally. Everything means something else to me. There are stages of my life I can relate to The Beatles, which obviously a lot of others around here can't. It's very interesting hearing how younger people have got into them. Especially the much younger people here. After all, why would you like a band from the 60's?
