For past Rolling Stone's "best albums" lists, pre-selected critics just submitted their top 500 albums and then the final list was "averaged" out from the multiples. This one was probably done the same way. I've never liked the lists in general - they all seem to focus on classic rock (which reveals the ages and biases of the critics involved), but this one at least had some recent stuff on it and some jazz and country. Sometimes I've come across good stuff on these lists (e.g., Captain Beefheart, Randy Newman, Richard Thompson, Public Enemy) which I wouldnt've normally picked up. Most of the time, though, when I've bought albums from these lists my reaction is "HUH!??! WHAT?!?! WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL HERE?!?!?!!?" Something else new and bizarre in this one is including anthologies. How can any single album fairly stand up against a Muddy Water's anthology that represents decades of his work? How can that be compared to "Pet Sounds"?!?!!? I don't get it.
