John's wife Cynthia-- who he had tried to keep secret when the band hit the big time-- was being replaced by Yoko Ono. Cynthia went on holiday with friends to greece in the summer of 1968 and the memory of what she found when she returned home unexpectedly is as vivid today as it was then.
"The two weeks in greece were wonderful, a total change. Our arrival home, it seemed, was unexpected. "It was four O'clock in the afternoon. The porch light was on and the curtains were still drawn. There were no signs of life, just an ominous silence.
"the front door was not locked so we all trooped into the house shouting, "Hello, where are you? Is anyone home?" there was no response until we walked into the morning room where we heard quiet murmuring of a conversation. When I opened the door a scene that took my breath.
"Dirty breakfast dishes were cluttering the table. Facing me was John, sitting relaxed in his dressing gown. "With her back to me and equally relaxed was Yoko.
"The only response I received from both parties was "oh, Hi." "They looked so right together. I was a stranger in my own home.
"I wanted to disappear and, in fact, that was what I did.
"I rushed out of the room upstairs, gathering random personal belongings together. All I knew was that I had to get out. "As I ran along the landing, I notived a pair of Japanese slippers neatly placed outside the guest bedroom door."

I think thats a bloody terrible thing for John to do. Alot of respect I had for him was lost when I read that ( I read it awhile back though) I mean he didn't even have the curtesy to try to hide it. Cyn was a wonderful wife, all things considering. She just got replaced.
I honestly think that you can not chose who you fall in love with. If he fell inlove with Yoko then it was ment to be and no blame should be put on him. However, the way he told Cynthia was bullshit. Guys that lie and sneak deserve no respect in the "love" field. I do still have respect for him in the music field though.

I hate to look down on John for anything, but being a husband and father, he lost a ton of respect from me with this matter. I've known about this story for years, but it still sucks. He should have been a man about it and broke it to her in a little more subtle way. Cynthia put up with alot of crap, i'm sure!
Well i may be a bit old fashioned but. You marry and there you stay. Until they die, or until you die. If they cheat you're free. But I don't see how he is justified in cheating on Chyn with YOKO of all people, simply because "he fell in love" woop di do. Commitment means more than a stupid crush, which if John had left his d!ck in his pants I'm sure thats all this thing with Yoko would've been
*edit* and for the record when you write d!ck it shows up as "private"

I think Paul's relationship with Jane Asher ended in a very similar fashion - didn't Jane walk in on Paul while he was in bed with Fran Schwarz? I might be wrong...
Was John ever in love with Cyn? It's a shame but, in England in those days, if you got a girl pregnant you married her - simple as that. I don't think John ever stopped looking for a soul mate - first Stu, then Paul and finally he found everything he was looking for in Yoko.
By the way... I'm not for one second suggesting anything that John had "relations" with Stu and Paul - I for one don't believe any maliscious rumours that surface after someone dies.
Oh and a question for Beatle Ed... Just curious how you look at marriage (very good way to look at it by the way) but if your husband died tomorrow would you ever remarry?

I think John was in love with Cynthia at one point. He cheated on her with other women before Yoko though. In Cynthia's book "A Twist Of Lennon" she says that Yoko wasn't the reason their marriage broke down but she was a catalyst.
I agree that the way John acted when Cynthia walked in on him and Yoko was horrible. It was like he didn't care.
I think he was the type to just go with the flow. I don't think he would be the type to go to her and talk to her about it and I dont think he is the type to run after her and care about her feelings.

I agree it wasn't just John who cheated on his wife, but the other 3 beatles cheated on theirs too
Honestly, I feel bad for Cynthia, a little fun with John ended up in a marrage that was full of lies, and cheating. That was a really mess way for John to break it to Cyn that he was cheating on her, he could have shown some respect to a woman that delt w/his mess for so long, and told her nicely, well, as nice as you can be about cheating on someone.
If I had been Cynthis, sure as hell I wouldn't have put up with so much mess. No matter it was JOHN, and no matter how much I loved him. I can't suffer so much humilliation. The other three Beatles also cheated on their wives, but I'm sure Ringo treated Maureen much better than JOHN did Cynthia...
I'd say John handled it terribly and was wrong for how he went about it. As for it actually happening in the first place, John and Cyn married young and I don't think she was really the one John wanted in life, the person who "clicked" with him. I don't blame him for falling in love for the first time with Yoko (as he wrote in "Don't Let Me Down") - you can't help that sort of thing. You CAN, however, try not to be a jerk about how you handle it.
This always made me sad. Poor Cyn. What would it be like to be cut out of someone's life and replaced like that? John is one of my favorite artists but he gets my disappointment for this.
You're so vain, you probably think this post is about you.
