For No One. A great song, with wonderful lyrics, written from an unusual standpoint, the detached observer (... /you find that all the things she said/will fill your head/you wont forget her).
This observer is incredibly matter-of-fact and laconic (... a love that should have lasted years, ...you won't forget her, ... cried for no-one, and other lines). This adds to the poignancy of the song.
If you class Eleanor Rigby as a love song, I would put it even greater than For No One.
Shes Leaving Home - A great little story and i'm using the basis of the parents love for the daughter.
Got To Get You Into My Life - Ok, so its about pot. The majority doesnt know that.
Things We Said Today - I know, I know,,,,,but it talks about love. This is actually one of my favorite tunes ever. The live version from Hollywood Bowl is to die for. Thats the way the song should be played.
For No One gets my vote as well. One of Macca's more melancholy love songs, but for some reason always seems to cheer me up. Perhaps it's its message and how it reminds me that this kind of thing happens to other people, people learn to get pass it and it jsut fills me with hope. Universal sort of thing.
And if solo works are accepted, Maybe I'm Amazed. Just a powerful love song. Makes we wish I was Linda sometimes .
I'd say my favorites are Long haired lady(Such a great song I love it) and Maybe I'm amazed(My favorite version is the Paul McCartney and the wings 1974 studio rehearsal. I'm not sure if many people heard it but its the best version I've heard).
