I really love them all, but I'm not too crazy about the "Live in New York City" one. Just don't care much for it, and hate it even more when-in the vid- Yoko starts singing. <<cringe>> I just don't favor her as a live performer one bit.
(PS: I do LOVE John's version of "Mother" on this one, though. That's one of my favorites.)
The avant garde recordings are the worst....if we're concentrating on John's popular music, then Sometime in New York City (some of John's worst solo tracks, poor live disc, Yoko's tracks annoy even more than usual)....if we're going to choose a strictly John release then Rock and Roll (heard this, heard that).....and finally, if we're going to choose a John release of new material, then Mind Games (three or four great tracks, the rest is drivel)...
"Only people know just how to talk to people. Only people know just how to change the world."
I'll be the only one on this forum to say that I completely love the Mind Games album, save one track, and I also think Sometime in New York City (the John songs) isn't bad at all.
I'm a big fan of everything he did, really- except that avant garde stuff and the "Live in New York City" album. I just think the live album sucks because he seemed nervous when he was singing and so he went super fast on some things and it seemed kind of sloppy- but I do love the "Mother" version on there. That's the only good track. I hate everything Yoko did there, my condolences to the Yoko fans- of which I am sure there are many...(laugh)
The avant garde albums are the worst. If we're talking his own music albums, I'd say SOMETIME IN NEW YORK CITY. And I actually like Yoko's version of Sisters O Sisters on it. Sounds like one of the old girl groups tunes.
If we forget the avant garde albums and Rock and Roll (covers) and Shaved Fish (recopilation) for me it's Plastic Ono Band. Don't like: Hold on, Working Class Hero, Well Well Well and My Mummy's Dead. Good lyrics in general but the melodies and arrangements are poor (except: Mother, Love and God). Overrated, for me.
I'd have to say "Rock and Roll" just because they are not his songs, and they seemed like less-than-stellar performances. I'm really surprised to see anyone say "Walls and Bridges" as I think its his best (along with POB), and Mind Games isn't far behind.
Of course, I'm a true Lennon fan...I enjoy the 'avant guard' albums and don't hate Yoko. IN fact, I think she is as amazing as he was!!
Just out of curiosity, which one do you think is best? I remember playing them all a couple of times about ten years ago when the Rykodisc versions came out (I worked in a record shop) and thinking that Life With The Lions was the best of them. Not my sort of thing, though.
Definitely, Life With The Lions. Wedding Album is only interesting for the interviews and the box (original record, or the new mini-LP releases from Japan) and Two Virgins is amateurish. Cambridge 1969 is powerful stuff. No one can argue it is an intense recording...like it or not.

I think there was a photo of a slice of wedding cake included with The Wedding Album. I like the cheek of that.
There was. It's a neat little set. When I was a little kid, the Wedding Album was the HOLY GRAIL to me. When I first got it, I felt complete (for a 13 year old.) And actually, I got the same excitement last month when I picked up the CD box set of Wedding Album. Wonderful sentimentality to it.

I bet that brought in the punters.
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.
