Interesting point of view. It could be (George's kind of humour and used to be in the right moments) and which better moment than that one?  
I felt I lost a real soul friend. I felt empty. I knew about his illness but it was a great shock.

I thought I was being sarcastic. My point was that deathbed statements tend to be matters that are rather serious anyway, and yes, George would have expected it to be so.
I don't for a moment think George used his last breath to crack a joke, let alone passed away before getting to the punch line.

Just read your post again and realised that you realised that. Sorry.
