The Return of 'The Mersey Sound'
This CD was issued on 25th February to celebrate Liverpool’s year as the European City of Culture
and contains 30 tracks by both known and relatively little-known acts from the early to mid Sixties.
The tracks are:
Gerry & The Pacemakers: A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues.
Cilla Black: Love Of The Loved.
The Swinging Blue Jeans: Good Lovin’.
Cindy Cole: He’s Sure The Boy Love.
Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas: From A Window.
The Fourmost: Yakety Yak.
Beryl Marsden: Break-A-Way.
Gerry & The Pacemakers: Ferry Cross The Mersey.
The Blackwells: Why Don’t You Love Me.
Cilla Black: Anyone Who Had A Heart.
The Scaffold: Lily The Pink.
The Pathfinders: Don’t You Believe.
Gerry & The Pacemakers: You’ll Never Walk Alone.
The Swinging Bluejeans: You’re No Good.
Lee Castle & The Barons: A Love She Can Count On.
Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas: Trains And Boats And Planes.

Steve Aldo: Everybody Has to Cry.
The Scaffold: Liverpool Lou.
Gerry & The Pacemakers: Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying.
Tiffany’s Thoughts: Find Out What’s Happening.
Beryl Marsden: Let’s Go Somewhere.
Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas: I’ll Keep You Satisfied.
The Scaffold; Thank U Very Much.
Cilla Black: Liverpool Lullaby.
The Kubas: The Face.
The Fourmost: I’m In Love. . . . and incidentally . . .
Beryl Marsden, the Kubas and Steve Aldo were all part of The Beatles final tour of Britain in December 1965. Beryl was regarded as the best female vocalist in Liverpool at the time, Steve was a highly regarded singer and the Kubas were always on the brink of fame, but never quite made it.
Cindy Cole is, of course, Rita Hughes, the best female vocalist to emerge from Chester and former lead singer with Jeannie & The Big Guys. Sadly, Rita died of cancer in 1989. Tiffany’s real name was Irene Hughes and she was a founder-member of Liverpool’s first all-girl rock ‘n’ roll band the Liverbirds before leading her own Tiffany’s Dimensions and Tiffany’s Thoughts.
The Pacemakers, Fourmost, Scaffold, Billy J, Cilla and The Bluejeans are all well known, but Lee Castle & The Barons and The Pathfinders seem to have vanished from history. However, Jason Eddie is still an active performer. His real name is Albie Wycherley and he is Billy Fury’s younger brother.
The CD is a wonderful souvenir of the exciting sounds that emerged from Merseyside in the heyday of the Mersey Sound.
