Hmm, I remember seeing a Mentors episode with him. I'm pretty sure it just, uh, happened. he was hearing ringing in his ears before he went deaf. That's all I remember.

Beethoven lost his hearing in the loudest record-breaking clap of flatulence (he WAS German you know) ever recorded in earth's history.

It was a mighty performance in all aspects, and the echoes inspired the War of 1812 Overture many years later.
