Jimi all the way, he's great. Not many people can play guitar with their teeth!

I heard Jimi doing "Sunshine of Your Love" (on BBC) I think. It's amazing. Then I heard Clapton doing "Stone Free" from the tribute album of the same name. Of course it's thirty years later, but Jimi wins hands-down. Also, Clapton's "Little Wing" overdid Jimi's version. The closest to Jimi is probably Stevie Ray Vaughan, but he has more bite where Jimi has soul.
I guess you can tell I'm Jimi all the way.
I will say this for Clapton. There are some Jimi recordings where he gets into noodling--Clapton generally stays closer to a song structure. And I think some of Jimi's best stuff was on the first two albums--with traditional rock song structure.
Hendrix.... Jimi's first album, "Are You Experienced?" still to this day is....scary. Meaning that nothing, and I mean NOTHING sounded remotley close to it. But yet at the same time, people could identify with it. Hendrix's gift was just that. His playing was so huge that it not only inspired countless of people to want to learn how to play but it inspired known guitarists who were already considered greats; i.e. Clapton, Beck, Page. Hendrix's best work represented a freedom. And that's so important. Because without freedom, what do u have? Hendrix embodied freedom, musically and visually. And this inspired musicians and non musicians alike.
"Dont take life seriously, you'll never get out of it alive"
What i love about Hendrix's playing is his expression, nobody did that before or has since to be honest. Other incredible players have been (Gilmour, Townshend BB King, etc), but Hendrix had something else. How he made that instrument do that, i don't know!! WOW!! I never & still to this day didn't think he was a great songwriter, but i've always appreciated his playing, he just knocked everybody out. still think that Clapton is quite overated in my opinion. i mean he was fantastic when he burst upon the scene but .. not now??

I think Hendrix had way more soul. I'm not much moved by Clapton. But that's not to say Clapton isn't a genius on the guitar. It's just what you prefer. Hendrix has no equal and never will. I was just watching the History of Rock and Roll and Townshend says that when he and Clapton heard Hendrix play for the first time they were both scared. Scared because they knew how far they still had to go.
"Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup, They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe. Pools of sorrow waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind, Possessing and caressing me." "About a lucky man who made the grade" "I'm coming down fast but I'm miles above you."
Townshend says that when he and Clapton heard Hendrix play for the first time they were both scared. Scared because they knew how far they still had to go.
I say Hendrix, too, and that's not to put down Eric Clapton or Pete Townsend.
they were both pretty good, but i don't think Clapton has that bite that he had in the late 60's / early 70's. i still go for Hendrix, he was outta this world, but i personally never rated him as a songwriter.

I like both and both figure heavily in my cd collection. But you're right in saying Hendrix looked "natural" playing.....like the guitar was part of his body.
