Technically speaking,,,,,

1. Terry Bozzio
2. Neal Peart
3. Mitch Mitchell
4. Nick Mason (I know he studied at some music school, but he's never done anything that impresses me technically)
5. Bonzo
6. Ginger Baker
7. Moonie

If I was going to have them in my band,,,,

1. Bonzo
2. Mitch Mitchell
3. Nick mason
4. Ginger Baker
5. Terry Bozzio
6. Neil Peart
7. Moonie

Strange,,,,,I love Moon, but he falls flat in this poll.

I think they're all equally great rock drummers but the late, great John Bonham defined the art of rock drumming in Zeppelin.

moon, bonham and mitchell are all perfect for their bands.  Can you imagine a Zeppelin with Moonie drumming?  Or Bonham with Jimi?

But Stax legend Al Jackson Jr. gets my vote.  Session in, session out--with so many different artists.  Powerful but subtle.  Perfection every time.

Actually, I can easily imagine Bonham with Hendrix. Its tough to think of another drummer that can groove as well as Bonzo and thats pretty much what Jimi required.

You're probably right.  Bonham just hits the drums so hard, Mitch had a lighter touch.  I tell you who I really love as a drummer.  Richard Manuel.  Levon said he was his favorite drummer.  He kicks as on "Rag Mama Rag."

I've been told that each drum is tuned to a certain note also. Its a freaking sideshow. Nobody needs all of that.

I never really got Ginger Baker for some reason.  I just hear that clippity-cloppity beat to Sunshine of Your Love.  Maybe it's the way they were miked.  Bonham just sounds so much bigger.  BTW does Moon sound just a bit buried in some of the Who mixes--I'm thinking of Who's Next?

I'd like to know what Bonham does that is SO much greater than Moon. I just think he's often picked because of the band he was in. I KNOW he was great, but I don't think he was an innovater. Maybe he was, I don't know. I KNOW Moon was though for sure. His antics off stage are all people remember him for. Watch/listen to him at 18 drumming to their early stuff. It's amazing. Who else was doing that?? I just don't get it. I'm not putting Bonzo down, just wondering what is it that puts him above Moon. And yeah, he could groove and pound. Is that it? If anything, they are equal in greatness. Great at different things. But Keith was the innovator of the two.

Simplicity may be genius, but so is being able to push the boundries of an instrument to places that no just any musician can do. There's also genius in using the instrument in ways that no one else thought to do. Creating sounds that are unique to their style. If anyone can pick up a guitar or drum and play it the way these guys did, then I would think, why didn't anyone else think to play it like that before? And why do these guys stand out?  It's not always simple. Like David Gilmour, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Jimi Hendrix. How easy are they to emmulate? I have no idea not being a musician.

Yeah, that doesn't help. I can list a bunch of Who songs to where Moon excells. That's not what I'm looking for. I'm curious as to a drummers opinion especially.

PS
I love that song. I know he grooves and pounds on it. That's his strength. Still, wondering why he's put above Moon as innovator. And you hate the Who so you're biased.

terry bozzio's technical skills are probably the best out of the choices, but i was never the technical sort. i'm going with bonzo simply for the fact that he could really groove and played with so much power.

To put my two cents worth in for Sandra's question as to why I would choose Bonham over Moon,,,,,

If I wanted a drummer who could play maybe some deep blues, a little light jazz, a studio piece that needs to be done the same time after time, a pocket thats a mile deep but still drives,,,,,,,,,,Moon loses. He cant do any of that. Moon was great for the Who, but I dont see him being able to drum for anybody else. Thats not so for Bonham.

But how do you know Moon couldn't do that since he never did it? And how do you know Bonham could since he never did either? I mean, maybe they tried or something and I just don't know about it.

Cool chapter from the book Rock and Roll: A Social History:

http://www.thewho.net/articles/townshen/friedlan.htm

Doesn't have that much to do with the topic at hand, other than the fact that you can see how Moon and the Who are vastly underrated in more than one way.
