This must be 'Best Selling Albums from 1991 to 2004' in America. Only they have so poor taste in music. Sorry.....
Gee that's funny since some of the highest selling acts in Europe over the years have been Robbie Williams, The Spice Girls and Westlife. Both sides of the atlantic have their share of dung stinking up the charts.
Hey non-American dudes. You are dellusional. That list is probably world sales and Shania Twain is CERTAINLY not number one over here. When you look at the best sellilng albums of ALL time, you can see the musical taste a little better. Check it out:

I'd say both countries have some crap they listen too, but The Beatles are on the USA list 4 times as opposed to 2 on the UK list. And Floyd and Zeppelin are at least in our top 5. AND Madonna's not even on our list. Which is a major plus. Anyway, get your facts straight before you insult. I think the list that was previously posted were WORLD sales. So I guess we're not the only country that listens to crap occasionaly.
The Beatles Anthology 1 sold 8 million copies and it's not on that list
Soundscan only counts American sales of albums. For example, Moby's Play album sold 10 million copies worldwide but only 2.6 million in the States. I really wish there was a chart that compiled total world sales of albums.

Thank you!! You proved my point better than I ever could have done by providing the proof!

Soundscan only counts American sales of albums. For example, Moby's Play album sold 10 million copies worldwide but only 2.6 million in the States. I really wish there was a chart that compiled total world sales of albums.
The numbers I posted are from the RIAA website, so that means Anthology 1 sold 8 millions only in the States
Ok, everyone..........I can solve the mysteries for you all......
that list that was posted at the start of the thread is correct.......those are the actual soundscan sales for those albums. Note that Soundscan was VERY weak in the United States back in the early nineties, whereas now it tracks nearly EVERYTHING. So U2's Achtung Baby, which has sold more than 8,000,000 in the United States, has only sold 5,000,000 through Soundscan because Soundscan was only tracking about a third of the US market in the early nineties.
The Beatles Anthology I has sold 8 million units in the united states. However, that's because it is a DOUBLE album. Soundscan counts all albums as 1 copy, whereas the RIAA counts double albums as two units and so forth. Therefore, The Beatles Anthology I has sold 4,000,000 two disc sets in the United States for a total of 8,000,000 units.
That list posted at the bottom of the first page of this thread actually is the overall US sales. You will note that a lot of albums on it have higher sales than listed in the Soundscan list, and that's because of Soundscan not tracking a great deal of albums sales (particularly through record clubs) in the nineties.
Finally, the list posted on this page (page 2) with the World's Biggest Selling albums is extremely flawed to say the least. Tracking world sales has always been a huge problem, and I can already spot plenty of errors in it.
Hope that solves a lot of the debating.

This UK list does not reflect the whole truth, it has to be said.
If you look closely at that list, you will see that only three albums are from pre-1973. The reason for that is that this list relies almost exclusively on the information supplied by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). It goes without saying that this is a reliable source, but only for albums released since 1973. The BPI has a rule that it only certifies albums that were released since 1973 - the year they introduced the Gold award system in Britain. This is different to the US where the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is certifying any record regardless of its release date as long as the record company can supply sufficient documentation of its sales.
This explains why there are only 2 Beatles albums featured in the U.K. list.
If the above quoted list of best selling albums in the U.K. would take into account albums released prior to 1973, the following Beatles LPs/CDs would be featured:
"Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - The Beatles (1967) (4.5 million copies) "(What's The Story) Morning Glory" - Oasis (1995) (4.2 million) "Brothers In Arms" - Dire Straits (1985) (3.9 million) "Bad" - Michael Jackson (1987) (3.9 million) "The Immaculate Collection" - Madonna (1990) (3.6 million) "Abba Gold Greatest Hits" - Abba (1992) (3.6 million) "Stars" - Simply Red (1991) (3.6 million) "Thriller" - Michael Jackson (1982) (3.3 million) "Greatest Hits (Volume One)" - Queen (1981) (3.3 million) "Abbey Road" - Beatles (1969) (3.2 million) "Jagged Little Pill" - Alanis Morissette (2002) (3.0 million) "Come On Over" - Shania Twain (2000) (3.0 million) "Rumours" - Fleetwood Mac (1977) (3.0 million) "Spice" - The Spice Girls (1996) (3.0 million) "No Angel" - Dido (2002) (2.8 million) "I've Been Expecting You" - Robbie Williams (2000) (2.7 million) "Talk On Corners" - The Corrs (1999) (2.7 million) "The Very Best Of Elton John" - Elton John (1995) (2.7 million) "White Ladder" - David Gray (2002) (2.6 million) "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - Simon & Garfunkel (1970) (2.5 million) "Rubber Soul" - Beatles (1965) (2.5 million) "Greatest Hits" - Simon & Garfunkel (1972) (2.5 million) "1" - Beatles (2.4m) "Sing When You're Winning" - Robbie Williams (2.4m) "Urban Hymns" - Verve (2.4m) "Robson And Jerome" - Robson & Jerome (2.4m) "Sound Of Music" - Soundtrack (2.4m) "Greatest Hits Vol.II" - Queen (2.4m) "The Man Who" - Travis (2.4m) "Simply The Best" - Tina Turner (2.4m) "But Seriously" - Phil Collins (2.4m) "The Beatles" (White Album) - Beatles (2.2m) "Life For Rent" - Dido (2.2m) "Swing When You're Winning" - Robbie Williams (2.1m) "The Marshall Mathers LP" - Eminem (2.1m) "Now That's What I Call Music 44" - Various (2.1m) "Ladies & Gentlemen - The Best Of..." - George Michael (2.1m) "Life Thru A Lens" - Robbie Williams (2.1m) "Falling Into You" - Celine Dion (2.1m) "A New Flame" - Simply Red (2.1m) "Tubular Bells" - Mike Oldfield (2.1m) "The Bodyguard" - Soundtrack (2.1m) "Bat Out Of Hell" - Meat Loaf (2.1m) "Dark Side Of The Moon" - Pink Floyd (2.1m) "Tango In The Night" - Fleetwood Mac (2.1m) "True Blue" - Madonna (2.1m)
Those added Beatles figures are from a 1997 article in Q magazine. In the 8 years that have passed since then, they of course increased their sales, meaning that these figures are quite conservative.
Beatles '1' is easily their highest selling album ever worldwide...........it had sold over 28 million as of ealry in 2004.....and the album was the top catalog album of '04, selling over 700,000 copies in the United States.........so I'd say that '1' is undoubtedly one of the highest selling albums of all time with about 30,000,000 sold so far.........considering the pace it's at, I could see it becoming the highest selling album ever (worldwide) in a decade or two........
As for Sgt. Pepper's, that seems to be be their biggest hit studio album, but it'll be passed up by '1' sometime around next year.
