No, you are a great conversationalist. I like reading your posts.

Absolutely agreed.  We need MORE on topic, discussion oriented threads, not less!

Hoever you shouldn't take it personally if your subject doesn't generate a lot every time...threads seem to have a life of their own and the most amazingly trivial ones take off while the weighty ones never do.  It's a weird dynamic.

What is a moderator for?

Most moderators these days go for about $1.99 per pound, in season.

I've thought about this for a couple of days - and I want to say, right at the outset, that this has NOTHING to do with Dirk and his aliases.

There is another problem:

There are several moderators on this board, and they each seem to have a different "philosophy" of how to approach their task. Some leave everything well-alone (maybe because they are hardly ever here?!), some are very hands on.

Recently, a thread was locked, and the mod (colleen) explained why. Fine. I disagreed with the action, but I liked the fact that the action was EXPLAINED. Then, however, the locked thread was moved elsewhere, and unlocked! No explanation of who did this, or why. Then, another mod re-locked it (with explanation). What's going on? Do the mods discuss things - or do they just act off their own bat? Seems the latter - colleen locked the thread in question because of how it had gone into a "bickering match", but there are LOTS of threads here where that's been happening - and hardly ever do they get locked.

Next: deleting posts. It hasn't happened to me, but I understand some mods are deleting posts for various reasons. I would ask that when you do this, you EXPLAIN. Otherwise, threads become meaningless.

Lastly, and this is personal. I have been banned TWICE by a moderator recently. An appeal to Dmitry has got me back on quickly (thanks, D), and quite properly has not told me which mod has done the banning. I don't use bad language, though I do enjoy a battle - as do MANY others who don't get banned. It's hard to escape the feeling that a mod has it in for me, and bans me when I annoy them enough. I may well be banned again for this post! The correct thing to do is to WARN someone if you feel that they are overstepping a boundary, and tell them how they can avoid deletions/bannings. I don't like the peremptory and hidden nature of what happens here sometimes. It's hard to escape the conclusion that some mods have had the "power" go to their heads. Further, this board has no common policy about the role of moderator.

What a larf.  A troll calling for moderation.

Yeah, and the Nazis were the ones wanting all the new laws.

Just to clear a few things up...

Mods can only moderate their own forums, so I can't move, delete or lock a thread on PC's or Patton's (or any other mod's) forum, and vice versa. So if a thread goes missing it's probably because of a hacker or a glitch with the board.

Up till about a month ago, mods had the capability to ban a poster's IP address as long that poster had replied to a thread under that mod's control. This option never seemed to work when we were trying to block Dirk.

Mods can no longer ban members.

Mods DO operate their individual boards their own way - each has their own style. My particular style is to not interfere - freedom of speach and all that - even if I don't like what's being said. I'll only delete deliderately offensive posts designed to annoy US as Beatle fans.

I'll put my hands up and admit I did delete a lot of Dirk's threads, but with good reason; Dirk took to posting pornographic images and corpses in his signature, so I deleted as many of those posts as I could,  but I always quoted his comments - thus we were spared the images but kept the dialogue.

As far as I am aware there is no hidden agenda on this forum. The mods don't discuss the affairs of the forum unless they do it behind my back - the b*stards!! LOL

DM did contact me to ask if I'd banned Ydoll, here is my reply:

"Regarding Ydoll_Gwyn, I don't think it was me who banned this member. It might have been another moderator, but I don't see any reason why he would have been banned - I checked through his recent posts and there's nothing that deserved a ban.

Can he be re-instated?"

But... in hindsight it may well have been me. In the process of tracking Dirk's many IDs, I did ban what I beleived was Dirk. I'm not saying it WAS me, just that it might have been. If it was me, I'm sorry.

Mistakes DO happen though. I recently deleted the "Real Life Picture" thread by mistake just by ticking the wrong box! I'd meant to delete a sick and offensive thread about John Lennon!

This board ebbs and flows - sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes awful, sometimes great!

Maybe the forum is going through a bad patch at the moment... it honestly does get better - it ALWAYS does, believe me!

Anyone want to discuss The Beatles?
