The adjective ironic has 2 meanings:

Meaning #1: humorously sarcastic or mocking
 Synonyms: dry, ironical, wry


Meaning #2: characterized by often poignant difference or incongruity between what is expected and what actually is
 Synonym: ironical


So if Sun was employing the first example, then it IS irony.
