Well, it's been over 200 years, so I don't think it's gonna all of a sudden change. And we are called Americans by every country so it's not just us. Although when a person from another country is referencing us, it's usually those Americans.
What are the other Americas than? If not only North, South and Central? And again, they all have qualifiers. Besides, the term the Americas was created so that the more ambiguous term America would not confuse people. And the way you say 'you call yourselves Americans' confuses me. What are we supposed to call ourselves? Unitedans? Statesan? Americans of the Americas that include North, South and Central?
Another point of view I found: The United States OF America. The preposition of is equivalent to the of in Federative Republic of Brazil, Commonwealth of Australia, Federal Republic of Germany. That is, the of indicates the name of the state. In addition, other countries use "United" or "States" in their names as well. Indeed, the formal name of Mexico is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, currently officially translated as "United Mexican States" but in the past translated as "United States of Mexico". So to use US citizen would also be ambiguous.

You see, no other country has America in their title. So when the title of our country is shortened to America, it at least comes from the actual name of the country. People don't say Canada of America or Brazil of America. So people get it. I think people all over the world call us just America every now and then. And it's always pretty obvious as to who they are speaking of. It has nothing to do with us being ethnocentric. By the way we call ourselves Americans, not United States of Americans, it's the American Revolution, American machinery, American ingenuity and so on. So it's pretty much separate from what we identify as North America and South America. Which right there separates the term from just plain America.

I am not to worried about things like Gay right to marriage right now, that is all just a distraction. My main reason of moving to Canada would be the economic side of things.

If each one of us are a world, how many generalizations we need? ... if each one of us can feel inner wars ... then why we need to cause pain to our neighbour? ... to feel better? ... do we really feel better by doing that? ... I know it's not Chritsmastime ... but why we need a date to think in certain things?
And Raxo, I don't think anyone was generalizing. We were just discussing. People shouldn't be afraid to talk about these things. That's what OPENS up minds. That's how you learn. Talk and communicate. Was anyone being nasty or anything? It's all just healthy debate. One opinion is worth just as much as the other and all worth hearing.
