I like the idea of doing these kinds of threads, so here goes.

I can't come up with times, but let's assume for all intents and purposes that if we were to add this single onto this album, we'd have to get rid of two songs on Rubber soul.  Here's the track listing:

Side A:

Drive My Car
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
You Won't See Me
Nowhere Man
Think For Yourself
The Word
Michelle

Side B:

What Goes On
Girl
I'm Looking Through You
In My Life
Wait
If I Needed Someone
Run For Your Life

You four objectives are:

1) Removing two songs from the listing
2) Adding the single in
3) Changing the order of the tracks or leaving them the way they are
4) You must have at least one George son

Go for it.

Sorry to break your rule, but I'm going for a middle course, with fifteen tracks.

First I boot Michelle to kingdom come. Replace it with We Can Work It Out - it goes nicely after The Word.

Side 2 starts with Day Tripper, cos it sounds to me like a great side-opening track. Then follows What Goes On, Girl etc as on the proper album.

What is with all the hatred directed towards Michelle? It's a nice little track, if a bit trite.

You've said it: it's trite. You and I would only differ in how trite. You think it's a bit, I think it's very trite.

I still think its a good song for the time.
The Bass line is great, and it does suit Rubber Soul, as an overall Album.

..so there.

Yes, yes, great bass line - but that doesn't make a good song. The thing is, it DOESN'T suit Rubber Soul - its trite lyrics don't fit the sophistication shown in MOST other RS tracks.

So there.

Michelle is a good song. The melody and counter melodies are great composition, making it a good song, even if the lyrics are a bit gushy....It is a love song after all though. It would maybe have sat on Help better.

Not to mention that Girl had a bit of an Italian sound, so Michelle's French sound fits in perfectly, IMO.

GIRL - Italian sound? Where?

MICHELLE - French sound? I mean, he sings some crappy French: that doesn't give it a French sound!

Girl -- throughout the whole thing.  Being an Italian myself, I can safely say that's an Italian sound.

Michelle -- He pronounces himself very well, actually.  Michelle = French name.  French words = French.  And the sound is French-esque.  I can't really debate that -- if it's a French, it's French.

Sorry Frightwolf, I can't see Italian in GIRL at all.

And MICHELLE? French name - well, I know a few Michelles, none of whom are French. French words? Uh-huh - school French. And the sound - FRENCH-ESQUE! You're putting me on ...

Then you need to listen to some more Italian.  That's a definite Italian sound I'm hearing.

Michelle is a French name, and I don't think he's trying to write a French novel here, so forgive him if all the words aren't French.

Darn straight! I think you're dead wrong on the Italian thing -- I'm telling you that there's Italian in Girl.

But hey, it's being kept civil -- always cool.

No need to reiterate. I know your view. Saying it again doesn't make me think, "Ah you might be right". I can't hear Italian (whatever that means). That's that.

Yes, always cool to be civil. We agree there, FW.

Italian in Girl I see as a Greek-esque kinda thing when there is the (Instrumental) refrain section.

Love BLEAT in Michelle indeed Ydoll. It's still a song. That school french you refer to was Macca only about 23 at the time fitting in syllables whatever way he could. You could interpret that the naive french may have given the song extra charm. The extra frenchiness comes from the accordian.

I'm with Ydoll on this one. I've always found Michelle embarrasing. it's just too sweet and trite for me, and nearly ruins Rubber Soul for me.
As for Girl - well I guess you hear what you hear, but it don't sound either Greek or Italian to me. I need more convincing.

I must admit I do not relish singing any of those songs. I am not an ecstatic fan of them, but they don't deserve such a slating IMO. Not forgetting that they still had to appeal to everyone including the ladies. They were transforming so much during this time and trying things out.

Italian? Greek-esque? What on earth does that mean?!

The naive French ruins the song - forget "extra charm". The melody is good, and the song is well-played, BUT ...

Greek-esque means about as mush as French-esqe! I quote from you which after i looked back further now realise it was a FW post. Italian? I was referring to FW's opinion. Just a bit wierd you can't see the french angle in the music. It seems glaringly obvious. Parisienne cafe bars etc.

The ordering of Rubber Soul is utterly perfect. I grew up with Rubber Soul (it was the very first CD I owned) and thus I know the tracklisting inside out. The only song that strikes me as nondescript as Wait, but I like its position between the lovely In My Life the mini-epic If I Needed Someone.

I agree with GL, I'd remove What Goes On and Run For Your Life.

Side One
Drive My Car
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
You Won't See Me
Nowhere Man
Think For Yourself
The Word
Michelle

Side Two
Day Tripper
Girl
I'm Looking Through You
In My Life
Wait
If I Needed Someone
We Can Work It Out

Day Tripper now opens Side Two, while We Can Work It Out closes Side Two.

The reissues should have these two songs as bonus tracks.................heck you could fit all of the RS songs in both mono/stereo along with these two songs in mono/stereo on the same cd........here's hoping.....

"Only people know just how to talk to people. Only people know just how to change the world."
