any band band that is not the beatles is overrated. but the beatles are underrated because its impossible to give the beatles enough credit
Bobber has a point. New members are always welcome, and of course they post a lot when they first join. But please remember we all get e-mail notification for these. Visiting thread after thread of nonsense replies is a little annoying. If you have something to say/contribute we'd all like to hear it, bit remember this is not a Chat site.
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.
Though I'm not a Nirvana fan, I think the likes of Curt Cobain were more a saviour than punk music ever was.
Nirvana wasn't overrated. Their songs seemed to be so simple, but have you ever heard anyone do a really convincing Nirvana cover? Well, neither have I. There's just something unique about Kurt's voice (both in his singing and his screaming), about the way Dave beats the sh*t out of his drums and about how Krist's melodic basslines (clearly influenced by Paul McCartney) fit into all that noise.

I was paying them a compliment.

Oh, and the most overrated band EVER is White Stripes.
Could be. What little I've seen of them they're either very good or very bad. I wonder how much attention they'd get if their drummer had a penis. Seven Nation army was a GREAT single though. I seriously dislike post A Day At The Races Queen. (not the same thing, but as close as I'll get to using the dreaded under/overrated thingy.)
I think that the Sex Pistols are the most overrated band. I mean, I like them a lot, but one album people. They had one album. Not to mention that they were walking clothing advertisements for Malcolm McLaren's wife's shop...
You're so vain, you probably think this post is about you.

I think the Sex Pistols were mostly important because of the impact they had and not so much because of their music (even though it was pretty powerful stuff). And they didn't need more than one album. They just would've overstayed their welcome and weakened their impact with a second album.
At first I was going to say the Doors -- I like their stuff but I'm not into the cult of Jim Morrison like some of his fans are ('he's a poet, a shaman, the Lizard King, etc.'). I think certain bands are missing (U2, among others) but you can't include everyone. I'm sort of surprised the Beatles aren't listed even though this is a Beatles web site. (I bet they'd win that title if the general public, not just Beatles fans, voted; they're the most popular band but with that comes the inevitable backlash from non-fans.)
So I chose Pink Floyd. I like Floyd, but I think they're overrated for a few reasons: they went through three different phases (the Syd Barrett years, the '70s superstar years with Gilmour, and the post-Waters years), and I'm only a fan of the second of the three phases. (Although I've listened to very little of the Barrett years, so who knows.)
Dark Side of the Moon is obviously a great album; Wish You Were Here has its moments (great title track amongst them); I never got into Animals. But The Wall is one of the most overrated LPs of all time. It's bloated and overlong. If you chopped half of the music off of that, it might have achieved greatness (to me anyway, if no one else), even though that may have been impossible because this was a 'concept' album. Another Brick in the Wall, Dirty Woman, Comfortably Numb, Hey You, those are great. But there's too much filler.
And after Waters left, it wasn't really Floyd anymore.

I hear a lot of that. I do love Animals though. 2nd phase deffo and absolutely agree about The Wall. To vote on the above candidates...Never really got Cream that much for some reason.
