If Yer Blues didnt have the solo, it would be better. But still wouldnt get my vote. Not a big fan of In My Life, but it's great anyway.

Quoted from Ydoll_Gwyn
In My Life is currently very much in favor among Beatle Fans. But the song is spoiled for me because it contrasts two very different sorts of love. On the one hand, love for the past and the 'people and places that went before'; the old lovers and friends, some of whom are dead. The singer is looking back with love and no regrets. On the other hand, he says all these memories 'lose their meaning'. Why? Because the singer has a new woman. Sorry: but I think that's very shallow. After he tells us of 'new love', he says he'll never lose 'affection' for what went before. Affection? Oh I see, just affection now: earlier he had said he 'loved them all'.

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed,
Some forever, not for better,
Some have gone and some remain.
All these places had their moments,
With lovers and friends I still can recall,
Some are dead and some are living,
In my life I’ve loved them all.
But of all these friends and lovers,
There is no one compared with you,
And these mem’ries lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new.
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before,
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more.
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before,
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more.
In my life I love you more.

A very good song: definitely; but just a bit overrated these days.

Got to pick you up here. Maybe...(notice the word maybe. ) When the mem'ries lose their meaning it's a signal that with his new love, he is exploring things that are to become new memories. A chance to live life with another chance of happiness after suffering so much sadness and loss.

After reflecting on these emotions for people and things he's making a commitment to love this person more in the NOW. Not let that love be spoiled by his past. Of course those thoughts of people in his past will be held with affection. Would he use the word love/d again as a songwriter? Affection is the perfect rhythmic syllable for that spot in the song.

I think it's about living for the NOW and not being daunted/held back or to be made permantly sad by your past. It still shows acknowledgment of his previous friends and moments. Not shallow at all in my opinion. Very true.

I did'nt realise it was a current favourite. Do their songs come in and out of favour? Who monitors that? It's part of their defining Red Album I believe. A big gateway for potential Beatle Lovers.

Anyway, just a theory.

I like some parts of In My Life more than others. I don't like how he goes "In my life I loved you more".

The other day I was thinking of all the times I had done something fun or had been with my friends. And In My Life popped up in my mind. It was a nice feeling.

But the last lines are sucky ... "In my life I love you more".. Screws it up for me
