I never knew before today and reading excerpts from Tony Bramwell's new book that the Fabs overdubbed the Shea vocals a few days after the show, in a studio while the performance was played on a movie projector.  Apparantly, the audio source was via the PA system at Shea and sounded so horrible, they spent 4 hours dubbing the vocals. Could have fooled me (and have apparantly forever), they did an amazing job getting things on cue. Was this common knowledge or have I been ignorant all these years?

I think this was a well-kept secret up until Mark Lewisohn's book came out some years back. Did you know that the audio track used for Twist and Shout was actually recorded at the Hollywood Bowl!? It's the exact same version as they released on their Live At the Hollywood Bowl LP back in 1977!

There is a track where it's REALLY obvious that it's not the original live audio track though - on Act Naturally I think (one of Ringo's anyway) - they have just overdubbed the studio version!

Didn't some of these re-recordings end up on Antholgy 2 - I'll have to check. I think Baby's in Black is on the Real Love CD single though.

I might be wrong, but my memory tells me that this Baby In Black version was recorded at the Hollywood Bowl. As well. It is on the Real Love cd single.

Yep - BIB was recorded at the Hollywood Bowl but was not issued on that LP, same story for Everbody's Trying To Hide My Monkey!

Still, I'd like to hear the original Shea-recordings.

Actually, I think they re-recorded everything, not just the vocals (apart from that Ringo track I mentioned where they just used the LP version).

I don't think you'd be able to hear much of their performance - just imagine how much noise there was in that stadium!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

So would the bootleg albums I have contain the over dubbed vocal or what was recorded at the concert?

Well, that should be easy to determine. Unless they used other recording material or ways during the Shea Stadium concert, it's just screaming that you can hear...

Check to see if Twist and Shout is the same version as the Hollywood Bowl LP version.

The boots are the re-recorded version from the Special. It said alot of the crowd noise was also taken from the Hollywood Bowl. A very astute observation Mr. End about 'Act Naturally'-Bramwell said that was the toughest one of all.

Really? I thought that was so glaringly obvious! The soundtrack even stalls to so it keeps in synch with the visuals! Thanks for the compliment though

You're welcome, but he meant it was the toughest one to dub.
