This is not quite true even if there's a link.
Edward Lear didn't write novels.He wrote nonsense poems.So there's no direct connection.
Lennon was not a paperback writer because he wrote a couple of books published in hardback first.
A paperback writer was someone who was writing for a mass paperback public.Someone who needed to make money.
Lennon's books were a secondary thing, since he was already rich from songs and concerts.
The main theme of the song is someone who wants a break to make it big.Paul had already written this sort of letter to get contracts before the Beatles became a success.
