Whether its Pink Floyd or solo, Syd Barrett was one of the true masters of wordplay, right behind John Lennon himself, so now comes the question--what do you think are his best lyrics?

I've got a bike, you can ride it if you'd like
I really love you, and I mean you.
Its awfully considerate of you to think of me here, and I'm most obliged to you for
making it clear that I'm not here.
Wouldn't you miss me at all?
Were the fishes and all we do is move about.
Arnold Layne had a strange hobby...
Put on a gown that touches the ground.
Scream thy last scream old woman in a casket

From Flaming-

Screaming through the starlit sky
Traveling by telephone.
Hey ho, here we go
Ever so high.

---Gigolo Aunt---

Grooving around in a trench coat
with the satin on trail
Seems to be all around in tin and lead pail, we pale
Jiving on down to the beach
to see the blue and the gray
seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!

---Opel---

On a distant shore, miles from land
stands the ebony totem in ebony sand
a dream in a mist of gray...
on a far distant shore...

---Dominoes---

You and I in place
wasting time on dominoes
a day so dark, so warm
life that comes of no harm
you and I and dominoes, time goes by...

The Madcap Laughs, Barrett, and Opel. Their solo. Go to allmusic.com for some good reviews. For a more definitive collection with all the essentials if you don't want to get all three start off with Wouldn't You Miss Me? The Best Of Syd Barrett, but for a bigger fan (as you appear to be) I would just say get them all.

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm much obliged to you for making it clear That I'm not here.

And what exactly is a dream
And what exactly is a joke.

Lime and limpid green, a second scene,
A fight between the blue you once knew.
Floating down, the sound resounds
Around the icy waters underground
Jupiter and Saturn Oberon Miranda
And Titania Neptune Titan
Stars can frighten...

----------------------------------

sails cackling at every plate we break
cracked by scattered needles

--------------------------------------

Floating, bumping, noses dodge a tooth
the fins a luminous
fangs all 'round the clown
is dark below the boulders hiding all
the sunlight's good for us
'Cause we're the fishes and all we do
the move about is all we do
well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you...
------------------------------

wouldn't you miss me
wouldn't you miss me at all?
