Lennon's cheque sells for £2,000 ($3500)

A cheque signed by former Beatle John Lennon and made out to the Inland Revenue has been auctioned for £2,000.
It was put up for sale in Wiltshire by Lindi St Clair, formerly known as Miss Whiplash, after she decided she had no use for it.

The former madam, who now runs a Herefordshire duck farm, bought the cheque for £4,000 in 1988.

She said she did not know who had bought it but did not mind selling it at a loss.

She said: "There were two bidders, one was on the phone and was a commissioned buyer so I don't know who they are. I think that makes it more exciting."

Earlier, the 53-year-old poultry keeper said: "I had my fun with it when I bought it. Nowadays it's a nuisance having to keep it safe."

Miss St Clair, who once stood for Parliament campaigning for more liberal sex laws, bought the cheque after entering into a bidding war with the Hard Rock Cafe.

It was signed by Lennon on 23 January 1968 on a District Bank Limited form and made out for £6,946.

Two years after the purchase, Miss St Clair was declared bankrupt by the Inland Revenue.
