Steve Hackett, Steve Hillage. Possibly, even, Steve Howe. But, if so, maybe because his band (Yes) never quite reached the same status or fame as other 70's prog rock outfits. BTW, it's not a 'Steve' thing!

Oh, absolutely. I have an uncle and two cousins that are better than half the guitarists you'll find in any '100 all-time best guitarists' list, and none of them ever recorded anything.

I get by, as long as I don't try to do solos.

I used to be in a band where I was the only guitarist, and we had three different songs that required a solo. But I totally sucked at doing solos (still do), mostly because I hate solos and never really payed attention to them. After a while I managed to come up with one halfway decent solo that sounded more complicated than it was, so I used it in all three these songs (and once even in a cover song). Fortionately we never recorded two of those three songs, so I think not too many people ever noticed.

Absolutely with you for Joe Walsh. I like Rush, but never rated Lifeson that much. Vernon Reid is on one of Santana's albums. He plays fast on it. Is speed a thing for Vernon Reid? Never heard of the other guys.

I think Jeff Beck is a celebrated axe wielder, he just hasn't 'made it' in a commercial sense like his contemporaries. "There and Back" is one of my favorite albums.

Underrated? I've never seen a top ten list without Jeff Becks name on it.

Steve Lukather from TOTO is underrated. He rarely gets mentioned and he's done some incredible stuff.

Amen, Bruthuh. Everyone thinks that he was in TOTO and it was pop music, but get him solo and he SMOKES. If anyone wants an incredible guitar CD, pick up 'No Subscriptions-Live in Osaka'. It's him and Larry Carlton (another incredible guitar player that hardly gets mentioned) and they just kick a**. There is a 13 minute version of Jeff Beck's 'The Pump' that is mind-boggling.  It's a little late now, but another super cool album by Lukather is his 'Santamental' Christmas album with other greats like Slash and Eddie VH. Great choice Tkitna.

Lita Ford isn't a 'great' guitar player unless Mairi wanted to include her as a female entry so it wasn't a fraternity of male players. If that's the case, Nancy Wilson from Heart should be on the list, she's a fine musician, and my baby, Shawn Colvin plays with tunings that are so out there, its like she's mastered a dozen instruments on one guitar.

Stephen Stills doesn't get near the credit he deserves.  I heard "Bluebird" the other day and he's amazing.  He's also got a great interplay with Neil Young on so many songs.

She's some hair metal chick from the 80's. I hate her. That duet she did with Ozzy was his lowest moment. Made me wanna puke.

LOL, I was just listening to that song today! But Joan Jett is better. Yeah.

Plus, I think Lita kinda played up her sexuality to sell records. Joan oozed sexuality without trying.

does The Edge fall under the "not celebrated for being uncelebrated guitarists" thread, cause hes not here in the "uncelebrated guitarist" thread nor in the "celebrated guitarist" thread.

you cant deny his skill. and the fact that he never took actual lessons till like 92. even if you dont like U2, his skill as a guitarist is undeniably awesome

George was a great guitarist, and im sorry i didnt realize you did mention the edge.

John's guitar skills weren't great. George definately had the guitar genes. perfect example of john's more rhymic guitar skills and not lead guitar, is Cold Turkey. thats an extremely easy guitar part in comparison to george's stuff.

I know I am going to get eyes rolled for syaing this, but I think Joan Baez is underrated as a guitarist. Not a lot of people know that she played all her own guitar all the time. So that means all that AMAZING work, on All My Trials, and later, Diamonds and Rust, was all her. She was a helluva better guitar player than Dylan.

Yeah I was just saying you're not the only one who appreciates him. There are about three or four people in the world that do. I don't know who the other two are, but they're out there somewhere.

Paul Carrack was part of that band temporarily, right? Somewhere on the attic is an album by Squeeze on vinyl. Great stuff. Never really scored a hit over here, except maybe for Cool For Cats.
