From todays Metro (London): The Arctic Monkeys have swung (geddit) past the Beatles in a list of the greatest British albums ever, a poll shows. Their debut record "Whatever...." released on Monday, came fifth in the list while the Fab Four's album Revolver came ninth. It may soon become the fastest-selling debut album of all time, with nearly 120,000 sold on the first day. ..NME..said.."They (The Arctic Monkeys) have innovation and sheer balls..in abundance. Top of the list is Stone Roses eponomous(sp), Smiths "The Queen is dead" and Oasis's "Definately Maybe." Italics mine. |

You're right. This is the first band to go big via the net so are probably drawing more attention than they deserve. Lets wait for that tricky 3rd album. NME has always been up its own ar*e. |

In my opinion they sound like a Libertines tribute band. That's not a bad thing though - I LOVE(D) the Libertines!
The NME gets right on my nerves though - they have a very long history of bigging up a bands first album and constantly writing rave reviews about their gigs. They then take great pleasure in ripping the band to shreds when the second album doesn't live up to the hype the NME created in the first place! Annoying rag! |

I used to be a Melody Maker Man. But one year they gave best album and single to The Mission (who I loved, but best - no way.) Q seem to strick a happy medium. I've never been into Mojo or Kerang, bit Mojo does look quite good. |

Yes. On reflection me thinks we're being had. As Johny Rotten said " get the feeling you're being swindled?" or something like that. |

How can an album thats only been out for about 37 minutes jump ahead of Revolver then? Sounds like a lot of bandwagon hype to me. Lets ask the same question in 10 years... |

It's a bad Libertines act in my opinion. The lead singer sounds like George Formby on Acid. |
| Whats the matter lads? Blue Meanies? |

The big rave here is that they were discovered independantly by fans on the net rather than via evil corporate advising. Gives them "cred" But I don't think it would be too hard for some marketting people to manipulate the web to get the ball rowling. A cyber version of paying people to scream. |

The thing about that is when I heard their latest single it struck me as a bit of a rip of Polytheme Pam/Mean Mr Mustard.
It's about prostitutes and dirty men.
Just struck me that way. |

I like Arctic Monkeys quite a lot.
It's quite astonishing that 9 of the 13 songs on the album are available online legally and for free yet the album still does as well as it has done... |
