Chuck Berry's version is handshake. The Beach Boys' is a slap in the back The Beatles' is a punch in the gut.
Great song, but I like the Beatles the best. |

I love Rock And Roll Music (the song too) ... A bad day again? ... I've read -in threads from the past- how some people said not good things precisely about this cover ... I can't remember the threads or all the usernames (I would never say the nick of any username here, -as you may understand-, tho I remembered 'cos this is not exactly for a good thing) ... If you think that my expression Lots of people here can't stand it is not the correct one (I was not saying "almost everybody here" but certainly more than one: lots) ... I'm changing it for: More than one person here can't stand it. If you think that my expression Don't worry about search! We all have been news here at some time! is not correct ( news here is a pun ... in sunnish a new person is just nuevo=new (adjective but a noun at the same time) ... so I putted together the idea of being a new member here and being good -of course- news precisely for that ... I also tried to excuse him for not knowing -it's understandable- about the antecedents of opinion here about the song) ... P.S. I usually don't explain so much ... not to bore people, y'know, ... but there are cases and cases ... here it seemed that an explanation was needed. |

I doubt it pc. Here's what Lewisohn says : A scintillating one-take recording of Chuck Berry's 'RARM', with a slightly echoed Lennon vocal, all the Beatles on their familiar instruments and George Martin again displaying his prowess as a rock'n'roll pianist. No overdubs, just a magnificent live performance. |

So here we've got another discrepancy with DM's site ... as I said before on another thread I DO doubt DM's site about this kind of things. http://dmbeatles.com/song.php?id=216I've always thought (because I read it somewhere) that this was recorded live just in one take ... and that Sir George played the piano ... if he was the only one who played it it's a very good performance -more than good, considering who made it-. Anyway, why three playing the same piano? It doesn't sound diferent than played just by only a two-handed person, does it? I agree with zipp ... and Mark too (tho I'm not one of his faithful fans) One source with the three of them on piano: http://perso.wanadoo.es/sissu/maingear.htmAnother one with only Sir George: http://www.upv.es/~ecabrera/"A magnificent 'live' rendition of Chuck Berry's song. Performed by the four Beatles plus Martin on piano, the track shows how much they loved to play live, and how sad it probably was for them to have to perform singing out of key or without hearing themselves on stage." AMEN! |

Whoever played what Lennons vocal has got to go down as one of his best.
As far as can tell there is only one guitar on the track and i can imagine John singing without being plugged in and thrashing out some chords on his 325. That would free George up for Bass leaving Paul and George Martin on Piano?? I dont know... just a loose guess. |

Yep, that's the link I've posted ... one that I like a lot ... but there are some mistakes on that one (in my humble opinion) ... http://dmbeatles.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-cc/m-1098136827/s-15/so I can't believe in all that it's on it ... nor in another one ... nor in Mark just by definition or as a rule ... if you're right pc31, then Mark's work is awful pretending to be The Bible (I do wish you were right! ... just to pull down prejudices about his work) I wonder how they managed to play that piano part that we can hear on the song by all of them at the same time without lots of mistakes ... if they did it it's one of the most awesome things done in their recording career ... but after all they were the Fab Four so two of them were more than enough to such a thing ... and if they had help, imagine! LOL! |

I was (still am) with Mark on this one (I've already said it) ... but Mark made some already proven mistakes ... remember that too ... it seems that he can't forget it 'cos he's working on his define-tely one(s) ... the issue? You've got to wait some years ... Does anybody knows a site saying which instrument(s) played each one of them on their songs ... but acording to what Mark said in his Bibles? If he's so good why not a site believing in him ... I don't think I'm asking for too much ... I would like to find that site (There should be tons of them, uh? ... after all, he's the one who knows more about their recording career -tho I'm not one of the ones who think so- but each site I visit says something that does not agree ... ... how blind people can be!!! LOL! ... or maybe nobody believes in him with eyes closed precisely because of his mistakes? |

Correct! ... it's one site I like a lot (I've already said it too) but it's got some others mistakes too ... Some that I've seen (without check everything that's on): http://dmbeatles.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-cc/m-1098136827/s-15/I do wish to find one site with this kind of info but acording to Mark's books ... I think that that guy made a good work ... perhaps he's the one who knows almost everything about their whole recording career ... but maye he's wrong about some songs like some others said in the past ... after all he corrected his first book ... but, how many mistakes remain ... let's hope that his next work's even better ... if it's possible ... Anyway, I admit that he's the reference number one ... but not necessary the only one. |

Did George play the bass on this one? (we discussed when George played the bass for the first time ... ... and when they all began to exchange their roles here: http://dmbeatles.com/forums/b-cc/m-1098136827/s-15/ ) Rock And Roll Music(Chuck Berry) John Lennon: Vocals, electric guitar Paul McCartney: Acoustic guitar(?), bass guitar(?), Piano(?) George Harrison: Acoustic guitar(?), bass guitar(?) Ringo Starr: Drums, castanets George Martin: Piano Recorded October 18 1964. Availability: Beatles For Sale Live At The BBC Anthology 2 A fine version of Chuck Berry's song from 1957. The Beatles even recorded it on Chuck Berry's 38th birthday, but most likely without knowing. It’s also worth to note that there seems to be some confusion about which Beatle is playing which instrument on this track. Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick says in his book Here, There And Everywhere that George Harrison was playing the bass guitar, and Paul McCartney the piano. Most others, however, have credited Paul on bass and producer George Martin on piano. The version on Anthology 2 is a live recording from Tokyo. Rock And Roll Music(Chuck Berry) Just let me hear some of that rock and roll music Any old way you choose it It's got a back beat, you can't lost it Any old time you use it It's gotta be rock roll music If you wanna dance with me If you wanna dance with me I've got no kick against modern jazz Unless they try to play it too darn fast And change the beauty of the melody Until they sound just like a symphony That's why I go for that that rock and roll music Any old way you choose it It's got a back beat, you can't lost it Any old time you use it It's gotta be rock roll music If you wanna dance with me If you wanna dance with me I took my loved one over 'cross the tracks So she can hear my man awail a sax I must admit they have a rockin' band Man, they were goin' like a hurrican' That's why I go for that that rock and roll music Any old way you choose it It's got a back beat, you can't lost it Any old time you use it It's gotta be rock roll music If you wanna dance with me If you wanna dance with me Way down South they gave a jubilee The jokey folks they had a jamboree They're drinkin' home brew from a water cup The folks dancin' got all shook up And started playin' that that rock and roll music Any old way you choose it It's got a back beat, you can't lost it Any old time you use it It's gotta be rock roll music If you wanna dance with me If you wanna dance with me Don't care to hear 'em play a tango I'm in the mood to gear a mambo It's way to early for a congo So keep a rockin' that piano So I can gear some of that Rock and roll music Any old way you choose it It's got a back beat, you can't lost it Any old time you use it It's gotta be rock roll music If you wanna dance with me If you wanna dance with me from here: http://www.thebeatlesonline.com/pages/beatles_rockandrollmusic.htm |

i doubt that George played bass on Rock n Roll Music, it would have been known i think & George never played bass before, & wasen't even that confident. I only know he played a bit of bass in later years, Golden Slumbers.. and John played bass on The Long & Winding Road. |

You're wrong, George played the bass some time before ... ... confident enough? George played Paul's bass in The Cavern on April 05, 1962!!! Yep, Paul on drums and Pete singing ... another pic of George from that day: The Rock And Roll Music bass part is not a difficult one ... ... and George played the bass on several tracks later, among others: Birthday, Back In The USSR, Honey Pie, Maxwell's Silver Hammer (?) or Carry That Weight and probably for the first time on record on Drive My Car ( 1965): (He said so in the Anthology book: "GEORGE: I played the bassline on 'Drive My Car'. It was like the line from 'Respect' by Otis Redding. " http://wingspan.ru/bookseng/ant/08.html ) |
