The thing with those Decca Tapes is they lack the energy that was so characteristic for the Beatles in those days. They almost sound like Bobby Vee.

Thats exactly right. They just sound like they were going through the motions.
(The Coasters 'Three Cool Cats' is so much better than the Beatles attempt.)

Very flat. Might be the recording, but judging from we can hear today, Decca can't be blamed for letting the Beatles down.

They don't sound very inspiring, that's for sure. Well, having travelled from Liverpool to London in a cramped mini-bus, and in a snow storm, been kept waiting at Decca, using unfamiliar equipment, John having a cold - hence George's not very strong voice doing half the singing, I'm not surprised. Add a dose of good old fashioned nerves and you've got a recipe for disaster. I don't think the song selection helped either. Did Brian want them to be a cabaret act?
