I don't really think the posed photographs can be used as visual aids to emphasise the breakup within the band. Many of the band photo sessions have images of the straight faced Beatles. The 'look' was a style that gave the impression of the band being cool and moody - a vogue trend of the mid to late sixties.
We all know the Beatles were loosing interest with each other - but I think publicity photographs aren't really a reliable source to use ...
I think that the Beatles were always cool, no matter what phase they were in. They were cool with the leather jackets of the early days, the moptops and suits, the psycadelic stuff, and the long hair hippie stuff too. They changed a ton throughout the years, but were always cool for their clothing and everything else about them.

I love how they looked in 1965 and 1966 the hair and everything, John looked good with abit of meat on him but I'm fascinated with the hamburg period, the scruffy teddy boy look and I absolutly love the psychedelic beatles and the cute moptops in suits. I don't really like the 68-69 beatle look because John was too thin and that beard so didn't suit him.
I would have loved to see them in Hamburg or in the cavern. to see that energy on stage and to see them having fun and to be able to actually hear them would have been great. but to see them at shea staduim would have been great too and be part of the crowd and the craziness. I seriously can't choose which is the coolest, they all are! *sigh* I was born in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I think they look super cool in this photo of their first trip to hamburg, taken by Astrid I belive.

Perhaps. Look at it this way: we are keeping the legacy alive, and that's important, too! We could do with some major coolness in our society right now.

I couldn't agree more!

1964-1967 were the coolest. '64 and '65 they looked awesome with their suits and witty remarks. But in '66 they looked bad a** with their longer hair/sideburns and awesome promo for "Paperback Writer/Rain". The winter/spring of '67 was cool especially during Sgt. Pepper with the moustaches and cool looking clothes. But I also have to admit the White Album time was pretty cool. The photos inside are memorable and the look "bad."
Great summary of the time periods, dcowboys107! Yeah, they were everything cool to cute to bad. How did they manage it?
