But nowadays the mass media is so petrified of being accused of sexism that you know what? They go after men, and now men are believed to be fat, stupid, insensitive, lazy slobs that can't do anything without a woman helping them. It's bullshit.

Can we clarify something? If Mairi is talking about Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and the like, then that is NOT chick rock. Chick rock would be those group of Berkenstock wearing women in the 90's who sang about PMS, being a b****, and getting revenge on their boyfriends. To lump them all together just because they are women would be SO wrong. And Janis Joplin is in a category all her own. She is equal to any male singer before or after. And by the way, 'chick rock' is a degrading term in itself. If you want to get feminist.

I was referring to "chick rock" more in the vein of 70s, 80s, and SOME 90s group of women who knew how to rock hard and didn't give a mess what people thought of them. Not lame-a** girl singers who always have to make it a point that they're a strong, female artist. You shouldn't have to say it if it's true.

Singers like Joan, Joni, Janis, etc, are so important that they are just "singers"- they don't need a label, chick rock or otherwise.

When I think of "Chick Rock" I guess the first thing that comes to mind would be poppy stuff like the Go Go's or the Bangles--kind of pre-fab made up bands that use sex appeal to sell records rather than their 'talent'. I'll get ripped a new one for this, but Janis Joplin has to be the most overrated female singer of all time. Joan Baez-yes, Joni Mitchell-by all means, but Janis just knew how to scream which was in the guise of heartfelt 'White Soul' music. Death is the best career move an artist can have.

I don't know, I think Janis was pretty popular before her death, but yeah, dying young does tend to elevate someones status to legend real quick. I think Joplin was a real talent. She was unique. I think probably seeing her live was something. Whenever I've heard her peers talk about her, they always seem very knocked out by what she did. She had the same energy you see in great male front men. Not too many women have that presence. Which is why I can't really get into women rockers and why I think they are not as well respected as the men. Of course Joplin's voice isn't for everyone. I get that.

Janis was powerful and put emotion into every song- not only did she sing the songs, she lived them.

For a good overview of Chick Rock you should get the album A Fair Forgery Of Pink Floyd. There are some wonderfully emotional performances by female artists. Although their are a few shitty ones as well.

No. She sucked. Luckily for her, she was part of the 27 club. There are/were a thousand female artists that sang from the heart a thousand times better than that piece of Jack Daniels mess. She got her kudos from being white and people are suckers.  How exactly did she 'live them'? Good for her, Pearl was a drunken whore whose legacy lives on for f*** knows what.

She wasn't the only drunken whore around. How about Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, John Bonham...or can't they be whores because they're men?

What's that got to do with anything anyway?

Also, plenty of white musicians got kudos for being white. That's the way it was. Nothing unique to her. Again, has nothing to do with it. She had something that elevated her. And I don't think it's just because people are suckers. But everyone's entitled to their opinion.

Um, those guys you named had/have talent. People look at Janis as really the first White woman who could sing heart-wrenching blues. She couldn't. She screamed, people thought it meant something, but, what the hell, Britny Spears has a star on the Walk of Fame, so what do I know?

Sandra, she blows. There are alot of so-called 'artists' that suck. But she ranks up there with the most overrated ever, just painful to listen to.

I don't know, I'm not a musician or artist or anything so I can't really say one way or the other. I just know that when a song of hers comes on the radio I usually don't turn it off. But it's not like I go out of the way to listen to her or anything. The only band I really go out of the way to listen to is the Beatles. Oh, and sometimes Elton John. Don't tell me HE'S not talented now!

Elton is supremely talented, especially with Bernie.
