Weird song. Well collecting Syd Barrett rarities on PFO I found this song, which said it was by Pink Floyd. However, listening to it, well stylisticly it seemed like something Syd might do, it was clearly John Lennon singing. Upon inspection of my mom's old Anthology collection, I found that this was indeed a Beatles tune and upon further inspection that it was one of many bizarre outtakes from The White Album. Discuss this crazy little forgotten gem here.

It's called What's the New Mary Jane and I know nothing about it. Someone around here will though that's for sure.

Yeah I have a thing on my computer which has Whats the new mary jane-beatles with pink floyd. But I do think only the beatles were involved.

A load of rubbish recorded over a three year period with the late Rolling Stone Brian Jones playing sax on it, but my opinion and $1.00 will get a cup of coffee..........

There's a lot of mix ups when you download stuff. People just put whoever they think it is. I can't tell you how many times I got excited because I thought I came across something really great only to find out that the idiot that posted it got the band wrong.

There's no Syd Barrett here. Just John and company. Nice pose, I thought Syd Bolan was dead. Apparantly its still alive and well wanking on the West Side. Nice AC. There's some some nice new lube I've seen on television. Have at it.

"This was a thing I wrote half with our electronic genius Alex", said John in 1969. "It was called 'What A Shame Mary Jane Had A Pain At The Party' and it was meant for The Beatles album."
Written in India when the Greek-born John Alexis Mardas paid a visit, it was demoed at George's Esher home in May 1968. At this stage it was a little over two and a half minutes long and as the Beatles improvised towards the end of the track one of them shouted, "Ooh. What's the news?... What are you saying? What a shame Mary Jane had a pain at the party. What's the new Mary Jane... oh, my God! Mary! Mary!" This gave rise to the unusual title.
The studio version, recorded by John and George with help from Yoko and Mal Evans, went on for over six minutes with a two-minute 'freak out' before the final verse. The lyric remained the same as demoed in May except for the line 'He cooking such groovy spaghetti', which came out, whether by accident or creative play, as 'He groovy such cooking spaghetti'.
The syntax of the lyric is unorthodox. There is a deliberate use of wrong tenses and wrong words which suggest that John may have been imitating the way that Indians often speak English when it is their second language. The story told is either deliberate or a coded putdown of someone in Maharishi's circle. Significantly, John had been recording 'Sexy Sadie' the day before.
At the end of the recording John can be heard saying, "Let's hear it before we get taken away". A year later he planned to have it released as a B side to 'You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)' as a Plastic Ono Band single but it was pulled at the last minute. "It was real madness", said John describing the track in 1969. "I'd like to do it again."

I think you've got 'Mary Jane' and 'You Know my Name' mixed up. Brian Jones played sax on the latter. He played a few different Beatles songs. He was on 'Baby You're a Rich Man', maybe those are the only two.

Once again, I don't know what your problem is. I found a picture of Syd Barrett taht I liked and decided to put it in my signature, despite the fact it was rather big. Thats not me, I have no clue where you got that idea. If the signature bothers you that much I'd be happy to change it.

I was happy to finally hear this piece on the Anthology.  I like it but I feel it was underdeveloped and that John didn't know where or how to end it.  It's sort of like "Give peace a chance" which concludes with John just stopping the song.  The chanting could have gone on forever, really.

Revolution 9 was superior to Mary Jane because it had more structure and direction.  I will say I hated what John did on his first 3 solo albums.  I could appreciate Revolution 9 and Mary Jane on a certain level, but Unfinished Music and the Wedding Album were, IMO, irredeemable and a savage insult to the fans he knew would buy anything he produced.  Were his intentions benign and purely experimental or expressionistic?  I guess I'll never know.  But I surely hated the damage those LPs did to my ears and MY POCKETBOOK!  But, no, I never requested a refund.  In my collection they remain and will until the undertaker dumps them, along with my ashes, in to his disposal bin.

No one mentioned weed here.  Supposedly that's what the reference implied and why it wasn't released at the time.

Absolutely right JF! Sorry I had one of those more frequently happening brain cramps! I still think both are a load of crap and Revolution#9 belongs there as well.
