Same as last year - here is the plan...

Next month is the annual Beatles Convention in Liverpool - it starts on Thursday 26th August and ends on Wednesday 30th.

The idea is to meet up in The Grapes pub........

...down Mathew Street on Friday afternoon (27th Aug).......

...grab a few beers........

...and a guitar...........

...sing drunkenly for ages and ages.........

...then go down the Cavern..........

...etc.... etc!

Now does that sound good or what!!!!!

THE GRAPES PUB!
Outside...

Inside!!!!

If you fancy going, give me a shout and we'll sort out arrangments but whatever happens, I WILL be going so I'll let you all know what it was like

Wanna come?

I will check the costs of flights from Amsterdam to Liverpool vv.

Mmm, what about this?

               EasyJet
ˆ     76.69     ticket
ˆ     21.99   tax

Heen:  U27002     24-08-2006     09:00     09:20          0               Ja
Terug:  U27007     26-08-2006     19:05     21:25          0               Ja

It's available and cheap... Problem is I can't fly on Thursday. I can fly on Friday, but will arrive late then (22.00). Another thing is I have to be back on Sunday... It's going to be tight.

The thing is there's no cheap flight on Friday morning. Lufthansa does it, but it's over 300 euro... And no return available.

I'm not promising anything here... But I will check things out and see if it's all worth it. I know, I know, just meeting you guys alone should be enough to get there.

Just got back. Unfortunately didn't catch up with Al it wasn't in the stars.
Spent most of my time in The Cavern - mainly because they didn't seem to mind people chuffing - and saw some excellent bands and danced my bollocks off. Favourites were a Japanese band called The Silver Beats (I'm not sure whether they realise they've named themselves after a vegetable) and an Argentinian band with a gorgeous female vocalist/ guitarist who actually got me dancing to A Day In The Life. Fantastic.
The only band I couldn't watch were an American Lennon Tribute band who each evening "showcased a different Lennon solo album." Um, no thanks.
Almost every band finished with Hey Jude, and more than once I caught myself in the middle of the crowd, all of us hands in the air, eyes closed, singing along. It was almost raptures and tongues. I thought then that this is getting a bit spooky, and I decided not to do any pilgrimage to birth places etc. Stupid probably. On the positive side, its not often I get to go to a bar and feel young.
And if I hear I Saw Her Standing There one more time people will die.
Liverpool is (hoping I don't offend anyone here)  one of the most depressing places I've been to. It feels like a city that's dying. The City Centre seems like one litter strewn street. Go ten minutes into the suburbs and there's whole streets boarded up and derilect. Loads of collapsing factories and the Cathedral glowers over the town like a tombstone.
But I'll be back next year. But didn't they though.
I see you guys been having some fun.

Well I got back late Friday, and wow - Liverpool was such an experience!
I totally agree with you Kevin about the aesthetic's of the City centre; the clashing of historical architecture with the frankly banal highstreets and market areas made for a slightly depressing feel. But come night-time, the energy of the city was personally something that was very good for me to see, feel and generally encounter

Student spots like the Jacaranda basement to me, still embodied that whole art-college student feel - with small dark corners, a mix of fashions and a laid back mood which just isn't evident up here in the North East.

Thursday night was by far the highlight of my trip - cramped in the Cavern pub (Not the one that's designed to look like the Cavern - the one opposite) The heat was ridiculous, the sweat profuse and the beat overpowering - but I'd have it no other way! The bands that performed were all from Argentina - and blew me away in their musical wealth and band knowledge. Each band performed different era's ranging from the odd Decca audition number [Besame Mucho etc] through to BBC covers then onto the Shea Stadium set before finally ending on Psychedelia. Afterwards, we went for a drink with one of the bands...but sadly couldn't find anywhere open! after they departed we luckily found Heeby Jeebies (?) a  pub/club in another cellar which was happening.

Such a fantastic time - and I'm only gutted I never arranged or bumped into some of you DM guys. There is always next year!

The band in the 2nd to last picture blew me away.
It was them that had me dancing to a Day In The Life.
And I can't believe The Cavern only charged 3.50 entrance.

^ Yeah - We were going to go to the Cavern, but the Bouncer explained that once you paid in, you had to stay which I didn't like .. so we went over the road for free.
