he has been gone for years....i don't think he was that good myself....his solo comeback was a bomb....and relics ain't that listenable.....

Well, it's all opinion of course. He was unique and he's got some pretty interesting stuff. He was pretty influencial on a lot of guys much more famous than himself. Bowie for one. But when I first heard him I wasn't too thrilled. It's definitely an aquired taste.

Also, just because a person has mental illness, doesn't mean they are dead inside.  He still got up every morning and did the things he liked. He painted, he wrote, he lived. Just like the rest of us. He was a lot better off than many of his peers who ended up on a slab at 27 or whatever.

his music you mean????or his passing?

Uh, and I don't think you have to be a dick about it.

The only positive thing I can say about a tragic event, though he's been 'dead' for quite awhile, is that AndersonCouncill can change his picture on his posts. Put the bald picture of Syd on there instead.

I actually think that might not be appropriate, however pointed. I mean, I'm a fan, and the fans would choose to remember him as he truly was.

I'm sorry you were so displeased by my sig, and after the initial thrill of such a cool picture wore off I realized how annoying the size was. I intend to change it.

Can I just ask why you (and pc) would rag on someones music on a thread that was started to pay respects to a person who just died? I mean, if Ringo just passed and people started going on about how much he sucked, would that not annoy you? Yeah, Syd's music isn't for everybody, but he obviously had something going for him because it's still around. I'm not saying it's all great, but he's got some interesting stuff. That's all.

I like her.

Anyways, I have to agree. If you want to say Syd Barrett's work sucks, I could care less, because frankly I disagree. Just like I disagree that I am, as juniors called me, a "glam wannabe". But don't you think this is a tad out of place? Start a general Syd thread for that discussion, but pay your respects here. Even if you don't like Syd, if you don't at least respect him that much you must not know music that well.

I don't particularly care for his music, either in Floyd or out, but in my book Syd occupied a special place in rock mythology. I find his self-imposed exile more poignant than most other suicide/overdose stories.

Syd rules!  Piper is a classic and the solo albums are right up there with it.  Nobody does James Joyce better than Syd.  Except for maybe James Joyce, who was a singer of note as well.

I was joking there. Related to another thread.

I also think that people can know Syd's music really well and still not like it. He wasn't mainstream or anything. It's like that with all of Pink Floyd's music. They aren't for everybody. I mean, you can say that about any band, but I think a band like the Beatles has more catchy songs and stuff that may appeal to the masses more so then the 10, 15, and 20 minute songs of Floyd.

I see we are getting a little bitter in our old age. Relax. Before I read your stupid reply, I posted a link for Revolution #9 for you. Enjoy or rip, your choice.

Again, I was JOKING. I thought you'd see that. But hey, thanks for calling me old. I appreciate that.  I have no idea why you are so defensive. I really was just kidding around. It doesn't offend me that you call her talentless or a whore. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. If you want to personally insult me by calling me old and stupid that's fine. I won't attack you though cuz I think you're basically a pretty decent guy with a good musical knowledge. I'm just sorry you feel that way. Oh, and thanks for the link. That's awesome.

BTW, we're probably around the same age, so if you think that's old, that's too bad.

Well, I meant by that, for someone like that, you need to at least respect them for their impact. Especially in a topic of mourning their loss.

I think people have trouble with the Syd material (Piper) because sonically it sounds so primitive compared to recording quality of DSOTM and the later 70s stuff.

Also, Syd tended to write songs, not song suites like Roger et al.  It's easier to think of the latter as being more ambitious/important, but I prefer Syd's stuff.  There's just a tad too much rationation and ego to Roger's lyrics.  Syd was lost in the Muse.

But once you get hooked.  That eskimo chain is tattooed on your brain.
