I believe the "Who" never really broke in America like the Beatles nad Stones did! Yes they had some hits and did sell a few million lps, but their songs were never played on the radio the way the Stones and Beatles efforts were therefore their exposure to the mass public never really occured.
Huh? The Who have been and continue to be hugely popular over here. I hear their songs all the time. Especially since there are about five tv shows on now that have a Who song as its theme. Even when the Brits were starting to wise up to their subpar output in the 80's, their last record at that time which didn't do that well in the UK sold in HUGE numbers over here. They've been playing to massive crowds for ages and always sell out. I think the Who is up there with the Beatles, Stones, and Zeppelin in popularity in the US. No question. I think it's as true now as it was in the 60's/70's. I was always more into them then the Stones anyway. I'm so sick of the Stones these days. I recognize their greatness, but I can't really get all that into them. They were great in concert though. But the Who were way better. And that was minus Moon when I saw them. I can't even imagine now great they would have been with him.
WEll if you were around in the 60s you would realize that the "Beatles" and "Stones" were much more popular and were not classifyed as just a group for "Mods" as they were though of. The Beatles exposure is legendary and the Stones had to work hard to even try to keep up. The Who never had as many hits in N America to give them the same exposure! Yes lots of people liked the Who but for every Who fan there was probebly a 100 Beatle fans?
I like the Stones mid to late 60's period, up to but not including Sticky Fingers. I like The Who up to Quadrophenia (not including Tommy). But I could easily live without both of them.
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.
I have listened to my Who albums way more than the Stones. However, Rolling Stones are great fun to sing along with in the car.
All you've got to do is choose love. That's how I live it now. I learned a long time ago, I can feed the birds in my garden. I can't feed them all. -- Ringo Starr, Rolling Stone magazine, May 2007
For all I know, Ringo might be a yogi disguised as a drummer! - George Harrison
The Who!! The Stone's annoy me after a while. They are too into the whole trying to be ethnic thing. The Who are straight up rock. They're more real to me. There's no one like them. I'm only talking about the original Who here. But they both blew me away in concert. But I didn't see the Who with Moon, so God only knows how much more floored I would have been had he been on that stage.
Though I'm not a big fan of either I saw The Who in 1976 at Charlton's football ground - The Valley. As I remember they were fantastic, though there was crowd trouble I think because of forged tickets. And unless my memory's on the blink, they played absolutely nothing from Quadrophenia!

A friend of mine was there too. He said their was a palpable air of violence in the crowd from the beginning. He agrees it was a great concert.

Hi Sandra. Ouch! They were originally a blues band after all, and that was at the core of their sound. And Mick's stage act probably owed more to James Brown than Bobby Darren, but "trying to be ethnic?"
For me its the Stones. from 69 to 73 they were top of the pile (imo). A run of great albums and singles. My Generation is outstanding, but as a recording act they leave me cold. Never seen them live.
I believe Gimme Shelter has one of the best intro's in rock. Is that Keith doing the high bits? And Sympathy For The Devil is as about a perfect a rock song as can be. Killer guitar, awesome lyrics, sneering vocal, spooky backing vocals. Fantastic. Never got off on The Who (except a couple of songs) but my exposure to them has been a lot less.
And Honky Tonk Women is my favourite riff song ... not only because of the guitar but bass and drums too! That's a stone in the way!
