On YouTube there's a video of Hello Goodbye where they are wearing their regular clothes as opposed to the video on Anthology with their Sgt. Pepper uniforms. Where did this come from???? Where can I get it? Anyone know? I watch Hello Goodbye constantly. I would die to have this version on DVD or video. And while we're at it, can anyone tell me of any other videos that I might be missing out on?? I can't believe the Beatles have ceased to be a band for 36 years and I'm still finding out about new songs and videos. How awesome is that. They really left a wealth of material for a band that was only together for short time. Well, short compared to most bands I guess. Anyway, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have three version on my dvd's with rare promotion clips (recently c/pied for pc31!) One with the Sgt Peppers customes all the way, one with regular clothes and one with both, in which they're fooling around on the stage. I'll try to upload them. Hold on.

Isn't the video on Anthology a mixture of all three?

The serious one where they pretend to sing was done mainly for English TV since the musicians' union said they should have live paid musicians.
They went to all that trouble and the BBC didn't show it anyway!
All the British now love the Beatles because they're part of the 'good old days', but in the sixties they often gave them a hard time.

You will indeed!  I also have that Beatles Promo Clips DVD and the original versions are fun to watch.  My DVD has about four or five different takes.

The version I saw in fall of 1967 on the Ed Sullivan Show was the one where they were dressed in their Sgt Peppers gear

Well it's nostalgia. You remember only the good stuff and forget the rest.
One national newspaper decribed Lennon as a guttersnipe in an editorial, I don't quite remember why.McCartney was berated for telling the truth and saying he had taken LSD.George's house was raided the day Paul got married. The White Album was criticised because of one small photo of Paul naked in his bathroom. And of course Magical Mystery Tour was crucified. All this in their home country!
But now people just remember the swinging sixties and what a good time was had by all.

Didn't George say "only Britain hates the Beatles"?
But to be fair, the drug busts were part of a bigger establishment assault on rock stars in general. The Stones got hit hard too.
Paul saying he took LSD was fair enough for criticism. Even though it wasn't illegal it was still recognised as dangerous. A rock star would still be criticised (rightly) for saying the same thing today.
MMT just wasn't very good.
I think rather than anti- Beatles, the British press was more anti-rock. (with the fabulous exception of The Times bless them.) Popstars were so much more pallatabler when they wree nonthreatening, wore suits and performed like monkeys for the press.

I never said they didn't.But the Stones were kind of expected to behave badly, not the Beatles. So the venom unleashed on the Beatles was more corrosive.
Now, of course, Sir Paul and Sir Mick are highly respected members of the community!

True. But then Paul shouldn't have gone on national tv and told the world he took drugs.
Are you sure the  "unleashing venom" bit isn't a bit harsh? A little example maybe? (all in the interests of good natured  hearty debate of course   )

Why?
Are you saying he shouldn't have taken LSD?
(Too bad, he didn't ask your permission).
Or are you saying that he could do what he liked but shouldn't have said anything?
(So he becomes a dishonest hypocrite).

I think maybe a little bit of that venom is still around...

No. I'm saying that you can't go on national TV and say you take drugs, and then say Britain hates you because the police start sniffing around.
I'm also saying that any rock star would come under criticism (rightly or wrongly, then or now, in the UK or US) for saying what Paul said. This was a counter to your point that The Beatles were coming in for unfair criticism by the british, not an exploration of Paul's morales.

And MMT deserved the bad reviews. Paul apologised the next day. Hardly examples of British "venom" wouldn't you say?

This is what I originally said and I still believe it's true.I didn't  compare them to the Stones or anyone else then or now.

As for Paul and 'drugs'.he didn't say 'I take drugs', he said 'I took LSD' which you've said yourself was not illegal so could be discussed.
Because he was a Beatle he was then told he had too much influence on the youth and should shut up.Questions were asked in Parliament etc.
I think Paul was right to tell the truth and the reaction was absurdly over the top.

To put it in context though, this was the year that The Times saw fit to run an editorial codemning the Stones drug sentences as being due to their celebrity status, and the year Jagger was interviewed on World In Action to explain why youth was in rebellion. Pauls comment was made in a climate of general hysteria over youth and drugs . It was bound to provoke a response, and if that response seems over the top now, well, they were over the top times.

Remember this was the 60's. It's a long time ago. Things that we take for granted now were thought incredibly risque at the time. The Beatles were 'long haired gits'. Even worse, they were the devil in the US.

I remember my parents at the time moaning about 'that bloody racket!', and about the way young people dressed. I remember thinking - I'm not going to be like that when I'm their age.

So then I hear myself moaning about people who wear baseball caps back to front, no laces in their trainers, and the crutch of their jeans hanging down by their knees!!!

I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.

Ha! You're so right. Sometimes I see teenagers, in the prime of their lives, their futures stretching out endlessly before them, acting as if they invented cool and are the most special people in the world. and you want to grab them and say "I was like you once you know. i used to think I was it as well. Enjoy it, cos it won't last."
But you can't, because you have to carry the drycleaning and you don't want to loose your seat on the bus because your gout's giving you jip. So you go home and put a record on, but your wife turns the volumn down, and anyway the news is on in five minutes.

And then get back to normal life like coming on the forum, doing work ect. Right now i'm sorta realising how much i am like my dad was when he was my age-we both owned simon & Garfunkels greatest hits album!

If she hasn't already divorced you, taken the house, the dog and the car.

Mind you, she also took her Bruce Hornsby CD's!

Hey, ohyea, "Take this brother, may it serve you well"

"Fri. 11/10/67  FILMING: Filming of three promotional clips, directed by Paul, at the Saville Theater in West End, London.  One had them in their "Pepper" costumes, one in their regular "hippie" clothes, and one with the Beatles in their famous collarless suits, dancing to the tune. John did the twist.   The “Pepper costume" film aired on the "Ed Sullivan Show".  George plays his Epiphone DE320TD Sunburst Casino guitar, John plays his Vox Custom.  Aired 11/26/67
HELLO, GOODBYE S:  Paul  W:  Paul McCartney   UNK release"

from here: http://website.lineone.net/~johnpaulgeorgeringo/book5.htm

-----------------------------------------------------

"Hello, Goodbye" is a 1967 song by The Beatles. It was the Christmas single for 1967, and topped the charts in both America and Britain (where it spent seven weeks at number one). It also appeared on the American album Magical Mystery Tour.

Though the songwriting credit is Lennon-McCartney, it was written only by Paul McCartney.

Alistair Taylor, who worked for The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein, once asked McCartney how he wrote his songs, and McCartney took him into his dining room to give him a demonstration on his harmonium. He asked Taylor to shout the opposite of whatever he sang as he played the instrument. Taylor later said, "I wonder whether Paul really made up that song as he went along or whether it was running through his head already." In any case, McCartney soon had completed a demo of his newest single- originally titled "Hello Hello."

John Lennon wasn't fond of the song, which he called "three minutes of contradictions and meaningless juxtapositions." His distaste for the song grew further when it pushed "I Am the Walrus" to the B-side of the single. Though Lennon had anticipated "I Am the Walrus" being the A-side of the single, Paul McCartney and George Martin believed that "Hello, Goodbye" was the more commercial tune. This dispute started a series of debates over single releases between Lennon and McCartney which prompted Lennon to say after The Beatles' breakup, "I got sick and tired of being Paul's backup band". Lennon felt that some of his best and most innovative pieces ("I Am The Walrus", "Across the Universe") were wrongly placed as B-sides to songs he regarded as "un-worthy" ("Hello, Goodbye" and "Lady Madonna"), although he was willing to compromise with fellow songwriter McCartney during this period with songs such as "Hey Jude".

The final lines of the song, where the entire band sings "Hela, hey-ba hello-a" (the portion that plays over the end titles of the Magical Mystery Tour film) came spontaneously in the studio. When the song was released, McCartney gave a more mystical explanation of the meaning of his song in an interview with Disc: "The answer to everything is simple. It's a song about everything and nothing. If you have black you have to have white. That's the amazing thing about life."

At least three promotional videos were filmed for "Hello, Goodbye", but not aired by the BBC due to its strict rules on miming.

The song was used in an advertising campaign for Telstra's Next G network"

from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello%2C_Goodbye

-------------------------------------------------

Hello Goodbye
Filming Dates: November 10, 1967
Filming Locations: Saville Theatre in London
Director: Paul McCartney

Three cuts of the video were made. One featured the Beatles in their Sgt. Pepper suits performing, with occasional shots of them in their collarless suits. The second cut was similar, however the boys were wearing regular clothes. The third cut had bits from the first two, with footage of the Beatles dancing to the tune complete with John doing the twist (very well, I might add!)

One of the three "Hello Goodbye" films was debuted in the United States on The Ed Sullivan Show on November 26, 1967; however, the others may never have been broadcast.

Due to a ban in the UK by the Musician's Union on lip-syncing, footage from Saville Theatre could not be used, since the group had lip-synced the song during much of the film. Instead, footage from the "Magical Mystery Tour" movie was shown to accompany the song. This version of the video debuted on January 11, 1968 on "Top of the Pops."
