on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, the guns of the "great" war finally went silent and the world was at peace once more.

Most British ( and consequently Empire and later US) forces were concentrated in Belgium, mostly in Flanders.Poppies grow in Flanders, and only in uprooted soil and so would grow on battlefields, thus they became a symbol of hope among devastation.
My grandad served in Flanders and was wounded in October 1918 ( a "good" wound though.) My dad was conscripted just after WW2, and ended up shooting Jews in Palenstine. Enough irony to sink a battleship.
There has been a move in the UK to switch to white poppies by Christian groups, who want not just to remember but reflect on the justice of their deaths. I'm anti this - it's very easy to sit here in our airconditioned 21st century world and judge and criticise the past. I don't want those millions of lost lives to be branded as wasted. They believed their cause was jusat.

While NZ does observe Remembrance Day, Anzac Day (April 25th) is a much more potent and strongly observed commemoration (and it's a holiday!). Same goes for Oz I think.
NZ's sending of troops abroad is seen as our coming of age as a nation (we lost 30,000 out of just over a million, which I think is the highest casualty rate per head of population ratio suffered by any country in WW1)

It says a lot about how our minds work that even amongst all that death and horror they looked for a symmetry (sp) and poetry in the ending date. Bloody Wilfred Owen! It is quite a thing how we can switch from murderous savages to teary-eyed poet in a flash.

I think most countries switched from "armistice" to "rememembrance" day in order to encompass all the subsequent wars that followed the war to end all wars.

I see nothing wrong with the red poppy as a symbol to wear. Nothing wrong with the white ones either. Either could be worn.

We don't say "happy veterans day" or as it would be over here: "happy rememberance Sunday" - it's a very solemn event, almost like a state funeral once a year.
