Australian air guitar T-shirt actually rocks Monday November 13, 04:42 AM      
  

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian scientists have invented a T-shirt that allows air guitarists to play actual music as they strum the air.


The T-shirt, created by scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is called a "wearable instrument shirt".


The shirt has sensors in each elbow and sleeves to detect and interpret the air guitarist's arm movements -- one arm chooses chords and the other strums imaginary strings.


The gestures are then connected wirelessly to guitar audio samples to generate the music.


"It's an easy to use, virtual instrument that allows real time music making, even by players without significant musical or computing skills," said CSIRO engineer Richard Helmer.


"It allows you to jump around and the sound generated is just like an original mp3," Helmer said in a statement on Monday.


Researchers specialising in computing, musical composition and textile manufacture combined their skills to create the musical T-shirt.


"The technology, which is adaptable to almost any kind of apparel, takes clothing beyond its traditional role of protection and fashion into the realms of entertainment," said Helmer.

I expect this pop culture trend to last about a year or two before it fades into oblivion like the pet rock.

I don't know how you are at all, but if you don't know about the pet rock, I must assume you're younger than me.  You're right about rock fans probably shouldn't wear them to concerts.

The thought it might be crossed my mind. Sounds very 60s/70s.

But...er...what was a firby?

firby was some little robotic rock thing that came out in the late 90s that was just another fad that lasted 3 or 4 years and cost the lives of 12 or so during the rush to grab them.

The Furby. Total rip off of Gremlins!



A pet rock. Very popular in the '70's.


Clearly we have way too much time on our hands over here in this part of the world.

I heard an interview with the chief designer of the shirt this morning. Their real aim is to produce a smart-shirt that can read your bodies vital signs and detect poisons, gases and the like. The air-guitar variant was merely a way of gaining some publicity.
I hope you all feel really bad now. Say sorry to the nice Australian man.

The thought that it might not be real crossed my mind too.
