I have never heard him mention the Who in any interviews as far as I know, but I'm sure he thought they were a great rock band equal to the Beatles.  I know Lennon mentioned the Stones & a few others in lots of interviews even though he must have thought Pete Townshend was a great songwriter & musician.

He had to have thought Pete Townshend was a great songwriter & musician...cause he was. It is kind of weird that John never mentioned The Who. But I'm sure he saw them as 'almost' equals to The Beatles. I don't think its like John to think anyone is better than he has. He did after all say he would prefer himself playing guitar than George(or something like that). I don't think John ever ate any Humble pie.

You're putting thoughts in John's head here. If he never mentioned them, he didn't mention them. We don't know what he thought of them.

mmmm not sure what he thought of the who..didn't he see them at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970 along with Dylan? Then again he didn't say anything about Hendrix either and he was just as big, and i think he would have though the beatles were superior to the who.

I do know about him hanging out with the late, great Moon during his lost weekend Bobber, but he never mentiond them except possibly once in an interview.

A Pete Townsend quote (when asked about the musical quality of The Beatles):
"Oooh, that's a tough question. Actually, this afternoon, John (Entwistle) and I were listening to a stereo LP of The Beatles, in which the voices come out of the one side and the backing track came out of the other. And when you actually hear the backing tracks of The Beatles without their voices, it's pretty lousy."
Obviously any affection wasn't neccesarily reciprocated.

Well thats just the way Pete Townshend was, very very direct when it comes to critisism.  Almost to the point where it sounds really rude. I actually saw a video of Pete Townshend being asked that question and he said "The Beatles are flippin lousy". I'm sure he respected The Beatles song writing abilities but felt his band was more superior in terms of playing.

other than his own original rock 'n' heroes (elvis, etc), john was not known for generosity of musical praise.

this quote can be watched and listened on "The Kids Are Alright". I think he said that somewhere in the mid 60s, think he might have changed his mind by now.

Off-topic, but, am I right in thinking that is the last known photo of Paul and John together?

I read that the guy who took this picture actually took some more. I have never seen that. This is indeed generally known as the last picture of John and Paul together. However, it was not the last time they met.

I always think sometimes Pete Townsend just loves the sound of his own voice. Some of his interviews might as well be him thrashing a keyboard whilst surfing Thesauras.com instead of some iconic  Gibson SG.

A walking monologue.

Whats the matter lads? Blue Meanies?
