We heard Paul tell the story on Anthology.  Here's how the cover photograph looked when projected before the record album-sized screen accidentally tilted backward:

We were fortunate for that mishap:

Rubber Soul!

I've always liked the fact that John's the only one looking at the camera.

Here's another clue for you all; the Walrus was Paul...

I think the photo for the Rubber Soul cover was taken with the special lens-effect included. That is the original one, not the unstreched one.

Yep. The story about it accidently being displayed incorrectly I think, is bollocks. You'd have had to very deliberately display it onto a sphere to get anything like that effect. And then it wouldn't look like that. It's a cropped picture takle with a very wide angle lens, something like a 16mm, but not a fisheye.

Look at the jackets of George and Paul on the unstretched one. Looks photoshopped to me.

Well, you only have to look at the shape of their heads on the long picture to see it's been adapted from the cover.

Thanks for posting those two covers together, raxo.  I think Robert Freeman was brilliant in the way he posed the Beatles in these two covers.

As Paul's narrative goes, project the Beatles For Sale cover on an album-sized sheet of cardboard, have it accidentally slip backward a bit and you get this:

"Can you make it like that, now?!  Rubber Soul!"

I agree. I think that rather than being an alternative shot, the picture has actually had the skewed effect corrected (which is also possible with Photoshop).

Compare the two. As you can see, you can't actually see Paul's and George's jackets on the original LP version so it looks as if they have been Photoshopped on so that there are no corners missing when the picture is tilted and de-skewed. Also note that the title has been cropped.

Yep, I agree Bobber. The non-skewed version is not the original photo - in my opinion it has been fixed.

By the way, in his book, Robert Freeman agrees with Paul's view of events.

Hello Goodbye is an observational genius, and has a very good library. Thanks!

Interesting to hear Bob Freeman confirm Paul's story, The End. Not that I thought it was particularly controversial, but I seem to remember hearing that story before the Anthology series; it must have been in a Freeman book or someone who was quoting him. Thanks!

Rubber Soul is what woke me up.  I bought a suede leather jacket.  And a guitar.

It's still a favorite album cover.  Only John's looking at the camera.

*sigh* If only I could see them like that in my room...

I adore this album cover for all the reasons listed above, but number one for me is George's cheekbones. Was there ever a better bone structure on the planet? Or, as Richard Williams of The Guardian said:
Quoted Text
George ... was born with the kind of lost-angel looks - hooded eyes, good cheekbones - that all rock stars should have.

To me, the stretched Rubber Soul cover portrays that perfectly.

Hmm, not bad. I'm kind of drawn to bonier facial structures myself. Ms. Welch always struck me as very beautiful:

Apparently she's married to David E. Kelly, some writer producer type, who looks like Jon Bon Jovi! Still, I think I have a chance to steal her away!

You're right. I remember an interview with him when he said she had the most perfect face in the world, and no one else could ever understand the joy and happiness he felt with that being the first thing he saw every morning.

That's right, BlueMeanie, think positive! I'm sure she'd love to meet you. Perhaps the nurse can smuggle her in?
