We've all noticed that a lot of people sign up, then never seem to get involved. It's possible to send a pm to each new member however. How about us sending pms to them to welcome them to the forum? It might encourage them to stay. Has anybody actually done that?

Each new member does get an email but no PM. It's a very good idea

Thanks for that. Could those who post their agreement here please send a pm to each new member.

I sent this to the latest member:

I would just like to welcome you, and on behalf of everyone here. The more the merrier! You will find that we are a friendly bunch and some of us have a great knowledge of The Beatles. Please contribute any knowledge and opinions you have. We welcome all new people here.

I've seen it on every forum I've visited: a lot of people sign up, but a lot of them don't post after that. It's just something that happens. It's my feeling that if I should get about ten pm's to start with, it'd scare me off. Maybe one of the administrators can send a personal message to each new member, with a welcome and a very small explanation. Let's not jump on new members all together.

Good point. So appoint an administrator to do that? I'll leave that to you, since you're an administrator.

No, I'm not. I'm just a lousy moderator.

Perhaps the automated welcome email could be extended to an automated PM for when they first sign in to the board.
